ihateCA...
you are only thinking about the case you live the US....
IF HE lives in korea(maybe he wanna live in korea,but hard to believe), PEOPLE ARE LIKE WHAT THE HECK IS University of Michigan..?are you crazy????this is the case when you talk to normal high school(cornell is well know in any country)

but UAE people....i dont know if he can speak korean....
and if he is gonna live in UAE OF USA, I RECOMMEND CORNELL OF UMich

Actually lackadaisy, internationally (especially in Western Europe and East Asia) and nationally speaking, Michigan is as well recognized as Cornell. In Korea, Daewoo's principle US academic partner is the University of Michigan.

dnduswo, the student in question is a Korean who's parents currently work in the UAE.

I think the best advice to give him is to go to KAIST and pssibly go to the US for graduate school. It seems like KAIST is very highly regarded in Korea and that's what matters for now.

i meant for conversation with normal high school kids....
michigan is sure well recognized!!no question....

it depends on where he is gonna live...
live in korea--->cornell 50% michigan25% kaist25%
live in us --->i dont know...
if i was him

Yeah, if he wants to live in Korea his choice should be narrowed down to Cornell vs. KAIST. Sadly enough, in Korea US News rankings are taken as GOSPEL, and since Cornell is ranked higher than Michigan people will automatically assume it is the better school for all majors. There are more Michigan alumni in Korea than Cornell, but Cornell alumni get to act like bigshots whereas Michigan alumni are always grumbling about Cornell (and other Ivy) alumni. That's the way it is in Korea...if a school is number 1, it'll be ranked number 1 for almost every major it has, not just a few that it's really good at. Winner takes all mentality.

I'd have to agree with ihateCA, reading through this i was thinking the same thing. . .What's KAIST?
