Sounds like this weekend the ER was filled with KP mids. Our son just went through two knee surgeries (Miniscus repair & ACL replacment) and our experiece with the whole procedure has been about as good as you could get. From KP, the coaches, the training staff and the surgeon they contract with everything has been so well handled. I have nothing but praise for the Academy .If anyone has the unfortunate need for medical care while at the Academy I hope their experience is a positive as ours.

May your son recover rapidly and completely.

My son went for care twice over the summer due to dehydration and over heating issues. He felt the care was good but did mention they sure like to draw blood and give IVs.

It is reassuring to hear that you have had such a good experience with something that involved.

He's lucky I wasn't there this summer, I would have had all sorts of fun poking him if he was coming in for dehydration :)

my son was there on Late Friday night!

He now is the proud owner of 8 stitches in his head.

Playing basketball, an opponent's elbow and my DS's head.... NOT a good mix.

But he is gonna be fine.

I asked him how North Shore treated him, and he didn't mention anything negative.

KP2001, One of those overly eager health care providers. I remember someone once commented in a very ignignant way, "they almost act like they take pleasure in this stuff".

Royce DM, Wow, did you read KP10's post on another thread two other kids that went to the ER this weekend? What ever was up with the kids this weekend? They all played a little bit too hard. I am glad he is going to be fine.

North Shore tends to be pretty nice to the Midshipmen as they are reimbursed for their care as opposed to someone off the street who they have no clue if they will ever see money or not. We also get special treatment from NS if you are brought in by the EMS service because they go straight to the back, as opposed to sitting in the waiting room for who knows how long if they were to come in on their own.

I am wondering how folks are adjusting to the change that their kid is not a kid anymore but an 18 year old adult and therefore you are not notified by either school or hospital when something does occur with your son or daughter.

yes, at first I was taken aback a little when Royce called to let me know he had stitches, and those same thoughts went thru my head... he is an adult now.

but it still hurts to know that I, his momma, wasn't contacted.

Talk about being knocked off our maternal pedestals!!!

Just be glad they don't call when they give the penicillin in the butt shots after some of them return from sea year ;)

Only kidding of course. :)

that is BAD! Oh so BAD! I could just give you a big eraser along side the head right now....That is my baby boy you are talking about! How dare he need a shot in the buttock! We are dealing with our sons leaving home for the first time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You just wait, your day is gonna come......

Thanks for the laugh!

kp2001 - Don't make me come up there.... I fail to see the humor.... Nightmares every night since my kid left for sea. Especially after some of his sea stories he likes to entertain me with.

"Only kidding of course" Yeah right. A big HA HA HA. None of you KP kids are too big for a spankin'. I'll hold him down Royce's Mom while you hit him in the head with your eraser........

Actually being a nurse, I am kind of sadistic about shots. No sympathy from this Mom. And he knows it.

And I understand the KP health system is liberal at that, IVs and drawing blood.

For years I was wanting him to cooperate with getting the Hep B series to no avail. I finally realized that if I wait he will get it compliments of the US Governent so just wait him out!

But now it is just plain wierd to be on this side of my son's adulthood and to know that if someone discloses information about my son to me that is violating medical privacy laws.

I am curious though in the care they recieve how good is the patient teaching.

Funny how they all line up to give blood now knowing they get extra Lib if they give. LOL

I think it is hit or miss. The main PA that is there is pretty good about explaining things. I unfortunately can't speak for any others as I'm not sure who is there now and who has moved on.

As to the liberal use of IV's at KP it is simply a nature of the beast. The liberal use is mainly during Indoc and believe me the kids that come in definately need it. The school has gotten better at keeping kids hydrated, ala the canteen they now make them wear all indoc, but there are still plenty of heat injuries.

The good news is that KP does give lots of shots and has a great relationship with North Shore. The bad news is that the mids need them! DS came home from sea and was exposed to TB and is now on 9 months of antibiotics! KP whipped him in for xrays pronto and checked him out. Apparently this is not uncommon and the mids are tested frequently. He is unhappy as alcohol and the meds are a a no-no. So much for finally being legal.

Heat injuries are a very common issue and I agree that the IVs may be in order.

I can tell you that as a nurse that if a patient can take oral rehydration due to vomitting or diarrhea that is the prefered route for even moderately dehydrated people.

I haven't cared for heat stroke people though so maybe there is a reason to be liberal with the IVs.

The bottom line is most people never drink enough when they are exercising. By the time you sense thirst you are already mildly dehydrated according to some authorities.

I'd imagine that those canteens should be refilled every couple of hours to keep up with the heat that they had this summer.

Patient teaching is a very big concern that I have. Giving instructions to a young adult is vastly different than giving them to an adult that is over 21. The problem is many people if they do not work in adolescent medicine see a person with the physical characteristics of an adult but do not understand the special needs in communication that they have.

If there is one piece of advice that I would give to a family that is sending their son or daughter off to any school across the country is to start early having them go to all of their dental and health appointments alone and then discuss the visit with them after they get home. It is by far easier to call the docs office nearby and get the important information when they are minors and at home then it is when they are not minors and across the country. It is a tremendous way to groom them to take care of these needs for themselves while having you as a back up if the information isn't clear to them once they are home.

Thank goodness none of the midshipmen were in a coma! North Shores Death with Dignity brigade didn't seem to have much patience with an older coma patient recently. See the Wall Street Journal article on in "How Faith Saved the Atheist by Pamela Winnick.

Please see my response in the other thread

Does anyone have experience with a dentist near the Academy? My son called from Hawaii and saw a dentist in Kauai for a toothache. Turns out he needs a root canal and crown. He gets to spend a few days at home before returning to school. I'm able to take care of the root canal when he's home, but the crown work will need to be done while he's in New York. Poor kid, when he's home at Christmas, he's getting his wisdom teeth extracted. Any suggestions???
