Kresge vs. Porter

After reading up on the 10 colleges, Kresge and Porter are the two that I find most appealing, but I’m having a hard time deciding between the two. I’m sure that no one person can answer all of my questions, but any that you have information on would be much appreciated!

What are some specific differences between Porter and Kresge? Pros/Cons of each?

What are some of the pros/cons of the Kresge apartments?

What are some of the pros/cons of the Porter dorms like? (Specifically the Porter Transfer floor and the Film floor?)

I read that Kresge is home to the Literature department. Would you say that the majority of Lit. majors are in Kresge?

What are some other colleges that are similar to Kresge and Porter, as far as the people go, that I could put down as alternates?

(Just to give you a kind of mental picture of myself, I’m a 21-year-old female, transferring from a community college in the East Bay. I’m outgoing, open-minded, 4/20 friendly but not particularly into the “party scene,” hoping to find an intellectual and enlightening environment at UCSC. I love reading and writing, and I enjoy films and music from all genres.)

Differences: Not much. Kresge has a lot more of an emphasis on outdoor activities, but they mostly stay in their dorms as far as partying goes. I've heard it's harder to meet people. Porter, on the other hand, is very socially based. Pretty much the same kind of people as Kresge (active, laid back, intelligent) but louder and crazier. Of course, if you want to be in Kresge, you can always make friends in Porter. If you play a musical instrument, all you have to do is bring it outside into the quad after classes and within a few minutes someone will come out and ask if they can jam with you.

I cannot answer as I am not in Kresge, but Ive been in them and they are very nice :)

As far as I am aware, there isnt a Transfer Hall...there might be, but if you are a transfer you'll probably want an apartment, in which case I am no authority. However, if you do live in the dorms, it's quite nice. Actually, it's not that nice because the building is somewhat old and not luxurious. However, I am in the old building which will be torn down next year. If you are moving in next year, you will be in the newly built building! That should be exciting! Some of the cons, however, of being in the dorms is that you may potentially have a small triple/double, which totally suck. Even if you put that you will not accept a small double/triple, they could put you there anyway, as they did me. A small triple isnt too bad, but the small double is pretty miserable to live in.
Now you said you arent into the party scene. Im guessing when you say party scene you mean a place filled with people getting drunk and playing beer pong and getting just absolutely ridiculous. I dont like that either, which is the great part about Porter. Porter is just hanging out, playing music, talking, and occasionally people running around. It's a chill, artistic atmosphere mostly.

I cannot answer

Merrill is pretty laid back. They dont do much, though. But it would be a good place to end up if you wanted Kresge/Porter people but not as loud.

Hopefully more people will respond to fill in the holes I left :)
