KU Housing

My son was admitted yesterday to KU. He's really interested and we will take him to see it in February or March.

What is the best dorm for freshmen? Is there one that is newer? He is a very social kid, into sports, not a huge partier but definitely likes to have fun.

Congrats!!! I think many freshman are either in Oliver or McCollum, although they are probably the ones most in need of renovations. They are your basic 2-person dorm rooms. My S is in Oliver. He chose it for the location, next to Allen Fieldhouse (basketball arena) and across the street from the Rec Center. He is on the top floor and has a great view out his window. The other dorms are all grouped together on Daisy Hill. My S stayed in Hashinger over the summer and really liked it (newer and nicer). He wishes he could have the physical building of Hashinger in the location of Oliver. Templin is very nice (suite style) and has a scholarly slant. Kids must maintain a 3.0 to return. Mrs. E’s, the main dining hall, is located on Daisy Hill, and Oliver has its own dining hall. If you go on the KU site, you can get a little bit of an overview of each dorm. KU also has scholarship halls located throughout campus. The name is a little misleading and living there has nothing to do with scholarships. They are smaller buildings with their own kitchens and in exchange for lower housing costs, kids take part in cooking and maintenance of their building. They are very close knit and community focused.

KU does not have the plush dorms some schools seem to be pushing, but the facilities meet all the kids’ needs and most kids can thrive living there. Just as they have the 4 year fixed tuition rate, they also have a 2-year fixed housing rate that you can lock in.

Not sure if you’ve seen this, but it’s a great video.

If I can help with any logistics or recommendations when you’re planning your visit, please let me know. The week of 3/15 is spring break, so 3/12-3/21 would probably not be the best timing. Once again, congrats to your S!

Thanks so much for all the info, my3sons - I need to talk to son/husband about when to go. Son wants to go so he can go to a basketball game if possible, in which case I will send H with him. I will definitely contact you with any other ???. S is pretty excited about KU - I think its a great option for him!
