I am currently a Senior in high school wanting to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering. My top 3 choices are University of Kansas, Kansas State University and the University of Missouri. I was hoping somebody could help me make a final decision between these schools. Which school has the best engineering school (electrical engineering)? Which school will give me the best overall college experience (social life, parties, etc.). Which school will make me feel the most at home?
Tuition cost is not a problem, so no need to consider financial aid and/or scholarships. Thanks!
Are you a resident of the State of Kansas? If so, there’s really no advantage in enrolling at Mizzou. All three will properly prepare you to be an electrical engineer. The campuses are all different, however. Lawrence is the iconic American college town, with a plus being that it is not terribly far from metropolitan Kansas City. I have heard positive things about the student experience at Manhattan, Kansas. KSU is relatively small for a major state university. Mizzou is a mega campus with all the bells and whistles of stereotypical college life.
Lawrence is a great college town. Next, Mizzou, but it’s not better than KU although it may have slightly better weather. Kansas State would be my last pick.
You may also want to take a look at Rolla (Missouri University of Science and Technology). It has a very strong engineering program (stronger than the other 3).
I think all three schools will give you the overall college experience. However, in Kansas, the University of Kansas and Kansas State are rivals, and typically students prefer one school’s atmosphere over the other. K-State is a little more rural in culture. All three are nice college towns, and there’s lots of school spirit. Have you visited the schools/campuses?
I will be visiting them in two weeks, which is presidents day weekend.
I live in Kansas CIty, Missouri., which is like 5 minutes away from Kansas state line.
There’s no doubt that the program at Missouri S&T is rigorous and very well regarded, but like a lot of STEM universities the gender imbalance and the isolated location is not appealing to some potential applicants.
Sadly Missouri S&T is not an option for me
Don’t sweat it. You will do fine and enjoy life as an engineering student at KSU, Kansas or Mizzou. Football is a community sport (as in, everybody loves it) at KSU, U of Kansas is a basketball temple, and Mizzou is a member of the SEC. What more could you ask for?
