A big thank you to the law enforcement personnel in Chapel Hill, Durham, UNC, federal and state agencies, and a big shout out to the caller to the hotline who brought down Mr. Atwater. We will sleep even better when the 2d person is caught. However, thanks to all of you for your hard work. God bless you all. RIP Eve.

Amen Atlmom - they have been the epitome of discipline and professionalism. Makes it just a wee bit easier to send our kids back to school this weekend.

Another shout from the Amen corner -- I am SO glad they caught both of those slimeballs. I will sleep a little easier now. It hurts my heart that this happened in a town that my family loves so much. I cannot imagine the pain being felt by Eve's family. May God comfort them.

I am EXTREMELY glad that these criminals have been caught, and I hope that they get the harshest punishment possible. Although, I really cannot help but be a little bit dissapointed in the DPD. I admit that I do not know all of the facts in the cases that I am about to talk about, but still it is something that we need to think about.

Is there racism in the media and the police department?

The Eve Carson case received (as it should have) tons of publicity and media coverage. Everyone knew about this case, we all felt for the girl and her family and hoped that the murderers would be brought down as soon as possible. Well what about the african-american girl, a NCCU student who was murdered? What about the indian graduate student at Duke who was murdered? Where was the media coverage and in-depth police investigations in these cases? I may speak for myself but I barely heard anything about these cases. And when I found out that the murderer of Eve Carson was also linked to the murder of Abhijit Mahato my heart literally dropped. Maybe if the police had done their job and caught the murderer after he killed the duke student, he would be in jail unable to kill Eve Carson.

The kid was using Mahato's cell phone. I am not in law enforcement, so I don't know how these investigations work, but I do not see why they did not catch him earlier if he was using the cell phone of the murder victim.

I do not mean to offend anyone, and I feel as strongly as any of you about the Eve Carson case. I wish that her murderers would receive capital punishment. But, I think that every case should receive the attention that Eve Carson's did. Whether the victim is green, blue, red, or yellow.

Maybe I am way off track, but I just think that we should think about this, and work together towards a change.

Interesting that the NC Governor is now offering a $10,000 reward for anybody who will come forward with more information about accessories to this crime. That suggests to me that they may think it's gang-related, though that's just a guess.

wolfpack: I agree that they should have been looking for Mahato's cell phone and car.

I really do think, though, that the lack of national coverage for Mahato and the NCCU student was not because of any race issues. I just think that Eve was a much more prominent individual. The student body president at UNC-CH is a huge position for any student to hold. This person is also on the Board of Trustees, knows city council members and attends those meetings, and also has some say over what happens at the other 15 UNC campuses. Eve was just someone everyone knew, also. She simply had that kind of personality, in addition to her highly visible job as student body president.

Whether it's right or fair, anyone in our society who is more prominent like that will always get more notice and coverage in the media and elsewhere. I think that's the case here, rather than some sort of racial bias. All those deaths were equally senseless and tragic.
