Kudos to Whitman

Our son has applied RD to this school. This is our second time around (we've got a daughter who is currently a junior @ a LAC on the east coast) -- so we have some perspective on the college search process.

All I can say is ~ hats off to the Whitman. When my son went in for his interview this past weekend (in Seattle), he & the other students were greeted most generously by the admissions staff. Letters from the school not only reach out to the students but to us parents (who are responsible for fronting the costs). The alum that I've observed seem to be almost fanatical about their school. Whitman -- like many LACs on this forum -- has a wonderful track record for producing accomplished graduates.

One word for Whitman -- CLASSY.

You can bet that when it is our third (and last) child's turn to go through the college search process, that we will make every opportunity to give her time to explore & give serious consideration to Whitman for her short list to earn her bachelors & place to call home.

oompalooma, that’s so nice to hear! Our son is a senior at Whitman and we all have had a wonderful experience there. I know it sounds weird to include ourselves in his college experience, but Whitman really does reach out to include families. When we’ve gone to family weekends, the faculty and staff have provided us with many opportunities to meet and get acquainted with them. I’ve met his faculty advisor several times, as well as other professors in his major department. They have been very gracious and open, and I’ve learned more about his chosen field by asking them questions. President Bridges gives out his personal email, and says: “if you need it, use it.” I haven’t met any helicopter parents who abuse the access, there probably are some, but Whitman knows that providing the best possible educational environment requires commitment on everybody’s part.

Good luck to your son, wherever he chooses to study!

Whitman is certainly doing something right. Applications for the Class of 2018 jumped 38% over the previous year. The admission rate dipped under 40%. Wow!
