What are my chances at:
Davidson
Vandy (legacy)
New College of FL
Denison (visited recently and fell in love!)
Rice
Eckerd
UNC-Asheville

Rice is probably a reach, even though your class rank is really good. It wouldn't hurt to apply. Other than that, I don't see a problem with anywhere you want to go. (I also saw your thread on the GW board, and think that you have a shot at there and American) Just make sure you make clear what your best talent is in your applications-since you were a teen columnist I assume it's writing?

Yes, I have attended two summer programs in creative writing, have won awards, been published in some notable literary magazines, etc. Is that a good "hook"...rural kentucky creative writer?
What would my scores have to bump up to in order for Rice to be less of a reach? I really am interested in attending.

check their website for their median SAT. Your GPA is fine.
The hook is good too, although I'm not sure what being from rural Kentucky has to do with anything (guess it's a geographical diversity thing...could be a tip factor).

I'd say you have an excellent shot at Denison - including a nice scholarship and the honors program. You need to be sure and interview with them. If you can't get back there, call and find out when a recruiter might be in your area. My son will be attending there this fall as a freshman. It is a beautiful campus and everyone there has been incredible throughout the entire admission and orientation process.

Actually, I'm very interested in Centre and have already been named a Centre Fellow (an honor given at the end of junior year) so I have a little bit of scholarship there. Centre is definitely at the top of my list.
What about the location of Rhodes? At one point I was very interested (they give out lots of scholarship money and have an excellent classics program) but I've heard mixed reports about campus safety.

thank you! congratulations to your son! i am hoping to call sometime this week (i am away from home at a summer program) and set up an interview for next week before the school year begins. Do you remember any of the questions used during the interviewing with your son?

In regards to a resume, I revised mine right before I left home, but I only included academic honors and extracurricular activities. Is that wise? Or should I include my GPA on there as well?

iamnotabronte:
I can ask him if he remembers any of the questions - but I'll tell you this. My son is fairly shy and not talkative at all. Yet, after the interview, the admissions person knew a LOT about him, and basically told him that he was in and would qualify for a scholarship of some level, and so must have done a great job interviewing him. I could tell that he really liked him (moms sure like that!). So, I would not over prepare. Also, he would not take my son's resume until the interview was over because he said that he feels it interferes with the conversation. From subsequent conversations though, it was clear that he did subsequently look it over good though.

Son just laughed when I asked him about questions - said he had no idea. See - if he was a girl she'd have it memorized! We have no idea about the GPA on the resume.

that's reassuring, every there when I visited seemed absolutely delightful and there seemed to be a real sense of caring and community.
thanks so much!
I hope your son has a really great year, please keep me updated as to how he likes the school!
thanks again!:)
