L.C. Smith College of Engineering Building

Hey everyone,

When I went to visit Syracuse I enjoyed the campus. All the buildings are stunning and each has its own unique look. Specifically, the engineering building looked good from the outside; but once inside I didn't know what to think. It seemed like an old school building and was really nothing special. Keep in mind that I did not see a lot of it and I was mostly in the basement. Also, I believe that they are currently renovating.

Overall, this is one of my top choices for next year. However, I will be spending a lot of time in the L.C. Smith building and I would not enjoy being surrounded by dilapidated classrooms and equipment.

Any comments or information about the building and engineering in general would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Andrew,

I recently toured SU & the L.C. Smith College of Engineering back in early April (Spring Break) & quite recently accepted their offer. For your question specifically, any engineering class you go to are mediocre (Clarkson U, SU, WPI, FIT are the ones i checked out). The really great thing about the building is the “hands on” workshops/rooms etc. Were you able to check out the two wind tunnels and flight simulators? really cool stuff that most schools don’t have. And yes for the first two years, no matter where you go, you will be stuck in most likely a “dilapidated classroom” b/c most of it’s theoretical classes. . . at Syracuse the last two years is a lot more “hands on” (especially senior year). In my opinion, get over it. . . that should be the least of your worries. Good luck.

yaa man your right lc smith isnt the best building on campus (actually probably one of the worst) but they have done work on it and like steve said get over it you shouldnt be worried about it at all. its not like your going to be having every class in there anyways

Steve’s definitely right about the hands-on nature of SU’s engineering classes. also, it depends on what type of engineering you’re going for, but if new buildings really do it for you, check out the new life sciences building–if you’re bio or chem you’ll have PLENTY of classes in there. Link might not be the shiniest building, but a lot of amazing stuff goes on in there, with engineering lab classes being up at the top.
