L&S Requirements for Reading & Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, Foreign Language.

Hi, I'm currently a CC student trying to transfer into the physics program at Berkeley. Unfortunately, I'm overseas at the moment, and getting in touch with either schools is difficult, so I decided to give this forum a shot.

Anyways, on assist.org it says:
"**By the end of the spring term preceding fall enrollment at Berkeley,
you must complete either:

1) The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, and
Foreign Language; OR
2) IGETC**"
Link: ASSIST Report: FOOTHILL 10-11 UCB Articulation Agreement by Major

Am I correct in assuming that the L&S requirements would be quicker to fulfill than IGETC? If so, can you explain exactly what type of courses I would need to take for L&S? I've already checked:
Degree Requirement-L&S Requirements
But I'm still a bit confused, so I've come up with a few questions.

1) Do I not have to fulfill the "Seven-Breadth Requirements"? Or only the RC, QR, and FL requirements?
2) Do the RC, QR, and FL requirements basically break down to:
-English 1a & 1b for Reading & Composition
-1 Math class for Quantitative Reasoning
-2nd Sem foreign language class for Foreign Language
3) What exactly does "The course you take to fulfill the QR requirement may not be used to satisfy another College breadth requirement." mean? Does that mean I can't use the same math classes as those used in the Major requirements (Math 1a-1d, 2a-2b, etc.) to fulfill the L&S requirements?

Thanks.

Just do IGETC, because it’s accepted at all UCs, all CSUs, and many private universities in California.

Yes, you are correct. The L&S requirements at Berkeley will be faster than IGETC. But a better choice is what nick_scheu said. Completing IGETC will clear the general education requirements for all UC’s and whatnot.

Well my backups are UCSD and UCSB TAG programs, and neither require IGETC, so I don’t really need it. I’d rather complete the program that would be quicker to finish.

So can anyone clarify if 2 English classes, 1 Math class, and foreign language would be all I need to fulfill the requirements?

I think the whole point of IGETC is that it satisfies all lower-division (general ed)coursework. Completing a few classes (english, math, foreign language) might get you admission, but from my understanding you’d still have to finish that specific UC’s lower-division work, which would be more work than just doing IGETC. Also, the UCSD TAG does require IGETC completion, and not sure about UCSB but I think they require it too.

:(

Didn’t catch that. I really do need to talk to a counselor. Thanks alot.

@tseliottt - right so then the 2 UNIVERSITY LEVEL English courses 1A and 1B and the quantitative reasoning is all you need pretty much. The foreign language is usually satisfied with your high school. I spoke to a Cal admissions officer about this issue specifically a few months ago. Take my word for it.
