Hey guys,

Ok, well I just finished talking to our school GC about trying to get an internship at a local medical school. However, she seems to think that you have to be 18 to take an internship due to HIPPA laws. Is this true? I am 17 and really want to work in a lab this summer, so any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Robbie

Robbie,
My son is 17 (rising senior) and will be interning in a major hospital lab this summer. He needed to show “working papers,” and I had to sign some consent forms.

I was supposed to intern at a company for my senior project, but a few weeks before I was supposed to start they called me up, asked if I was 18, and upon finding out I wasn’t, was told I couldn’t work there, then.

This was in an engineering lab, though, so it might not be the same for schools. I’ve had a few high school students work in my research lab before, so it’s likely there’s some special way they’re going about it where your age doesn’t matter.
