Labor Day weekend at UR

My son is filling in his admission packet and I see they come to school Aug 23 for orientation, then school starts on Thurs Aug 30 before Labor Day. The students have a 3 day weekend for Labor day then school resumes Tue Sept 4.

What do the students do over the 3 day weekend at UR? Do some go home?

I would expect freshmen to go home that weekend, a lot of them did last year as some of their parents were still in town or they haven’t settled/met many people.

They get to know their roommates and make friends. They go to social events, of which there are a lot. They start to get involved in activities they’re drawn to. They go to The Distillery for chicken wings or whatever. They take the bus to shopping. They goof off and have fun. They start their work. They go to Starbucks and talk.

I checked a calendar sheet for UR that covers several years. It is only last year 2011 and this year 2012 they must have had to start school before labor day probably to get the number of school days in. The next few years UR starts after Labor Day. Our HS had a similar situation a few years ago.

I guess it depends on whether the student feels they already made a break from home or whether they want to see their friends from HS a last time.

My d graduated in 2010 and I am fairly certain that classes always began the Thursday before Labor Day. There is a lot to do, still getting settled in, meeting people, getting to know Rochester and how to get around, catching up on some sleep, going to the gym and I am sure that there were some on-campus events.

I was wrong, they also started before labor day in 2010 but not 2008 or 9.

My guy won’t be coming home… ;)

Nope - mine will both be there too!

Hi all, Thanks to all the moms and others for the info on all these baords. I’m a dad of an incoming fresh football player…so he will be there Labor Day weekend ( which is his 18th bday) he moves in Aug 17th …

As I’ve noted in other threads, if you have a chance to move in early, grab it. No lines, park right in front of your door, super easy except maybe having to wait for your key.
