I'm interested in studying psychology. Should I choose a LAC or a university?

There are so many variables including cost, which environment you’d prefer, which LAC versus which university, what you’re interested in doing with a psych degree that it’s impossible to answer that question.

^agree with above. No one, other than you, can decide this. What you want to study is only one variable, and even if we had more info, we don’t know what makes you tick.

There is no right or wrong answer because both offer great educations – the biggest variable is the type of experience you are looking for in college. My S looked at one LAC and felt it was just too small – he went to a mid-size university which he loved and where he thrived. My D knew that she wanted a LAC from the start because she thrives on the intimacy of a small place and loves having close relationships with her professors – and she is also absolutely loving her college experience. I’d suggest that you visit different types of schools and find what suits you best. And remember, the size is just one variable to consider when you look at each college/university.

Some majors may limit what type of college or University to attend, as there are a lot of majors which are typically only offered at larger Universities and not at LACs. However, psychology is not one of those fields - virtually every college or University will offer a psychology major.

So, decide based upon other factors that you are looking for.

IMO an LAC is ideal for undergrad, not because of the liberal arts “philosophy” but because of the small classes taught by your professors and a more tight nit campus. if you need a massive sports/frat scene in a city size campus then, perhaps an LAC is not for you. but …I would strongly recommend an LAC for most people.

Yeah, that really depends. I majored in psychology at an LAC and I’m in a top PhD program now, but you can do that from a university as well. It’s really more about other things, like what kind of environment you’re looking for.
