My son is artistically talented and interested in perhaps pursuing an arts-related career, but would also like to have a good all around liberal arts education. He seems to like smaller liberal arts college in the east. We live in southwestern PA. Any suggestions on schools to check out?

Can you give us an idea of his stats - GPA, courseload, SATs? That way we can make more targeted recommendations instead of recommending schools that might be reaches or extreme safeties.

Aussie603, Also is he interested in studio art (e.g. does he want to be an artist, illustrator, graphic designer, architect, art teacher) or art history (interested in museum or gallery work or graduate level teaching)? My son is studying both art studio and art history and we researched colleges extensively, but as Carolyn says knowing your son's selectivity range would be the best starting point.

The most well-known LAC that has a well- established art program is Skidmore. They even have graphic design programs. Many other LACs do have art history or even studio art. Haverford would be a good one as would Bard College.

I'll list some schools but as the others have said without knowing scores they may all be reaches.

Yale
NYU
Brown (can take a few courses at RISD)
Carnegie Melon
Vassar
Princeton
Williams
Swarthmore

Ditto Tax Guy (ancierdad's list has more unis than LACs) -- Also, Davidson (really check this out), Middlebury, Wesleyan, Connecticut College, Hamilton, Kenyon, Oberlin, Bennington, Emerson, Ithaca, Muhlenberg, Sarah Lawrence and Chapman.

Many LAC's do have decent art history and studio art programs. However, most will not have as extensive programs as you'd find at an art school but there are still some great LAC's out there with strong studio art programs.

A few Examples:
St. Olaf (MN)
Lawrence U (Wisc)
Goucher (MD)
Southwestern U (Texas)
Vassar (NY)
Wheaton College (Mass)
Kenyon (Ohio)
Macalester (MN)
Alfred (NY)
Wittenberg (Ohio)
Lafayette (PA)
Muhlenberg (PA)
Bates (ME)
Bard (NY)
Middlebury (VT)
Wesleyan (CT)
Willamette (OR)
Lewis & Clark (OR)

For Art History Williams is the best.
For Studio Art, Skidmore, Wesleyan, Vassar, and Williams are among the tops.

Smith has a very popular Art History major, don't know about the Studio Art and can't find the catalog at the moment. There's also a small but credible very nice art museum on campus with third-rate works by first-rate artists (Cezanne, ****aro) and first-rate works by third-rate artists.

Whups...I now see that this is for a son. Never mind. Though someone with a similar daughter may find this useful.
