I am looking for small LAC with excellent studio arts program. My daughter is a great student, loves learning and discussion classes, and torn between art school and a LAC. She is also a wonderful artist. She has had some anxiety issues and can be OCD. I want a supportive environment, not a stress factory for her. She was home schooled and currently attends a boarding school so is used to being away from home. Any suggestions? Northeast preferred.

Bard College might be just the place. Have her visit before applying however. It’s quirky. Haverford, ditto. Claremont Consortium. CMU if she’s at all interested in the intersection of visual and computer. Bowdoin, Carleton, Wellesley, Muhlenberg. Tell her to go to a college. She’ll always have art but artists need so much more than practice. They need an LA education; they need to learn to see, listen, read, travel. URochester, Middlebury.

LACs with good studio art, good art history and overall good academics: Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Vassar, Haverford, Conn College, Skidmore, Smith. Also Oberlin and Kenyon in Ohio.

My son chose Williams and graduated with a joint degree in art studio/art history, but he also really liked Wesleyan, Hamilton and Kenyon. I would characterize the environment at all as supportive and nurturing.

I hope your daughter will look at Smith. The all women’s environment can be especially supportive.

Might look at Holy Cross.

Though technically a university, Alfred is very small (2000 undergrads, 300 grad students) and has strong arts offerings.

Wesleyan, Skidmore, & Smith. Then Bard, Wellesley. (Wesleyan and Skidmore have pretty amazing studio spaces for art majors.)
