I called the Financial Aid Office today and learned that after a review of my FAFSA and CSS Profile, my son does not qualify for financial aid. Knowing my EFC, I knew this would be the case but was hoping that he would be granted some institutional aid. I know UNC is a great school, but it is difficult to accept that my son would be turning down merit scholarships and invitations to the Honors program at three schools. UNC, I was told, does not attempt to match merit offers from other schools, so that is an avenue we can not pursue.

NJM...I am sorry to hear that. Does this knock UNC down a notch compared to other choices? I am still awaiting word from them as to FA. My S was admitted EA and it is tough when you don't know anything until well into April. Makes the decision that much tougher. Hopefully your son will still go to UNC if everything makes sense (and dollars). Since he is thinking of Poly Sci perhaps your S and mine will meet.

Hi atg4ever - He is still going to UNC. I'm just a little disappointed; hard to turn down money and honors. My son was accepted EA as well. His FA status is not posted, but they did tell me on the phone. You should call them on Monday. I'm sure our sons will meet if your son attends!

did they already process the additional information that was missing that you faxed?

Yes, they did. I guess I was still holding out hope for a merit.

NJM - I got no financial aid or scholarship. UNC is the only school I was not offered the honors program or money. Now my parents will have to pay full everything for my brother and myself who will both be at UNC next year. Not even a laptop grant. Feel kind of bad about it. Will try and be a TA my jr and sr year to make it a little easier for them.

Keep an eye out for private scholarships, part-time work and academic scholarships as you go along. Congrats to all of you on your acceptances. Visit your own counselor's office and ask for any scholarships that area still open. Check with the local UNC alumni office they sometimes give scholarships.

NJMom, we got the same result, but I expect the outcome will be different from yours. Total FA award is $3500 unsubsidized loan. Analysis used EFC unchanged by any Profile data. We are happy S was accepted at UNC EA from OOS, but bottom line is we have alternative nearly as good at 1/3 the cost. All efforts and hopes for merit aid at UNC were unsuccessful, not because unwarranted, but probably because there was no unfilled niche for him in building a class. That may be something for others to consider also; it is not simply that you are not worthy. Carolina is a wonderful school and campus, and the folks in NC are very lucky to have it available to them at in-state rates.

i have to agree on merkur on that one.
In State residents pay tuition so cheap, that it's quite a bargain.
we're talking $3900 compared to $22,000!!!

It's cheap because North Carolina residents pay taxes that fund state colleges like UNC.

Agree to an extent Cubsfan - but it's still a deal. In PA the much lesser known state schools are appprox. $6000 and Penn State is approx. $12000.
Big difference..... and believe me- we pay taxes LOL

NC residents have a gem in their backyard! Congrats.

We have not receive our FA package yet. Although today I was told that it is in the final stages of being put together and we should have it in a day or two. I am hoping that this means that they needed to pull out all the stops and find interesting options to make certain my S gets in w/o issue.
