lack of interview an automatic rejection?

i asked for an interview 4 days after the deadline (I confess to some slacking off due to a preoccupation with midterms and early decisions), and my EC apologized as they could not offer me one due to the bulk of the applications. I havenot even submitted yet and am currently working on my last essay, and this news was a bit discouraging, how seriously will this affect my app? I’m from Lebanon btw.

It’s certainly not an automatic rejection, but the numbers are a bit scary:
For students who did not interview, only about 1% were accepted.

wow that really puts thing in perspective, do you think that’s because not having an interview is a negative or bcz those who are too lazy/uninterested/careless/busy too schedule one would also have spent less time on essays and apps in genera, and would consequently have less impressive profiles? an international asking for near-full aid with no interview, should i even submit? @cory2067

cory2067 is right; not having an interview can make it tricky to get in. But if you’re really interested in MIT, I would still encourage you to apply regardless!

@violingirl15 sent in my application 30 minutes ago! wish me luck, I always get nervous upon clicking submit.
it’s tricky to get in either way tbh, I just hope the absence of an interview won’t change the way they perceive the rest of the material

Yay, I’m excited for you! Best of luck! I don’t think they’ll look upon your application more negatively without an interview; they are probably aware of the fact that not everyone who requested an interview was able to get one.

@violingirl15 i just saw ur thread about being admitted EA! CONGRATSSS

Thank you!! I hope you are admitted too!

Time management, setting priorities, etc. are all skills that a good MIT student must have. Missing the deadline to ask for an interview shows a disappointing lack of those skills. A task that should take just as long as it takes me to write this comment, i.e… not much time. While it is not, and shouldn’t be, a deal breaker, it does show a lack of the necessary skills. It is probably more the lack of those traits that results in the low admit rates rather than the specific lack of an interview.

If missing the deadline for asking for an interview is out of the norm for you, then I wouldn’t worry about something you can no longer control.

@HPuck35 yes, I totally agree with you. I do consider myself to be highly organized in general, and I did reprimand myself for missing the deadline. Hopefully the rest of my application conveys those essential skills you’ve mentioned, i really hope they’re not affected by the initial impression an application lacking an interview report would give. I sent a follow up email apologizing again, and thanking them, so hopefully they’d sense my interest.

The interview is an important part of the process. Not having your act together in time to request one is probably not a good thing. Good luck though.

@falcon1 Yeah i know, to be honest i’m not expecting to make it, and surely wont blame my lack of an interview for a rejection, i think that would only matter if i had a near identical profile to someone who did interview, then the interview would be used as a deciding factor. I know what ure thinking but i assure you thats not the case, this irresponsibility i showed is an exception and not my norm

It sucks that you couldn’t get an interview.

If you’re an outstanding applicant, the lack of an interview will not prevent you from being accepted.

I wish you the best of luck come March!
