How much will it hurt me that I don't have many leadership positions in school clubs? I will have been officer of a community service club for 3 years (rising senior), but no leadership positions in SNHS or NHS. I do things outside of school like work, internships, and playing in a band, but does it look bad that I don't have that many leadership positions in school-sponsored clubs? I am looking to apply to Cal, UCLA, USC, NYU, and Wesleyan. Thanks!

Leadership is a huge deal. I’ve been rejected from programs that demanded leadership after demonstrating 45 hours in a semester with one mentoring/leadership program as well as two other leadership rules with the required explanations of how I led/how I grew from it/etc. It really depends on the values of the particular group or school you’re applying for. Is there anything you can think of that you’ve done that exemplifies leadership? Leading a community service club will look good, but it won’t be enough to show that you’re a leader in more ways than with that one group.

@yullari27 With the community service club, I created a week-long event three times per year where we show appreciation for the crossing guards around my dristrict’s elementary and jr high schools. I also organize events around thanksgiving, christmas, valentine’s day, etc when we go to a nursing home and just talk and make crafts with the residents. I also tutor kids (ages 5, 11, and 15) for free (3 hrs a week, ~35 wks/yr), but that is completely on my own, no relation with any school organizations whatsoever.
I’m applying for the colleges of L&S, Dornsife, Arts & Science, and Science & Math, at their respective universities listed above.

Definitely cite all of that on an application. Those are awesome EC’s, and beyond college apps, make you an awesome person thank you for giving back to your community!
