VMT. this will probably tick you off even more. Do you encourage people to quit every time you see them express something they don’t like? Or is this more related to your experience with WPI? Relax. I don’t know why you would say I would be frustrated if my daughter goes to WPI. All the schools have room for improvement… My D is used to being the only girl in a robotics team. She was mechanical captain for 2 years and now overall captain. More girls have joined since and even more boys are joining, what a surprise. Anyway, as I said earlier, WPI is her first and only choice (there are several back-up schools of course that she still has to apply to). As for working her tail off, that is a given and is probably worse for my choice of school for my D. Seven days to decision day. Good Luck All!
@markab2 I am not ticked off at all. I was being a little tongue-in-cheek. From my perspective and having two kids going through this process, there is a spectrum of things to question/investigate/be concerned with; some much more important than others. And if one is looking for reasons to disqualify a school, those are easy to find.
I understand why you would like to see a more substantial website since the presence and engagement of women is important. The numbers are what they are. Perhaps the lack of a good website is an opportunity for your D.
She sounds very accomplished, and I’m sure she has a bright future ahead of her.
When my S and I toured, we had a female guide and she loves it there. The two of them geeked out over common interests in comp sci and electrical engineering. I think it’s just a STEM thing that there are more male students.
Didn’t hear if everybody got in. As for the balance of women to men, WPI at least provides the stats. Can’t find them at as easily in other schools. Additionally the tech fields, have lower percentages of females than the schools. My d is interested because of all the labs and can picture herself in their labs late into the night. Just like building FRC bots!
My daughter is a senior at WPI and has absolutely loved her her time at the school. WPIs male - female ratio has been slowly but steadily improving over the years and some majors are at least 50:50 (e.g. BME). She has never felt the ratio to be overly noticeable or detrimental to her experience.
