wat the heck is this?
im from Miami (FL), nvr really been anywhere else for very long. down here, you watch the Heat, you love dwyane wade. you watch the dolphins - but nvr talk about their losses. some kids golf and the cubans all play baseball. asians play cricket and ive heard that ppl wish they could play hockey. oh, and tennis/futbol/beach vball are things to do outside. random ppl play jai-alai too.

but what the heck is lacrosse!?
ive tried to wiki it but reading abt a sport does nothing for me. can anyone help me out?

dont laugh, im just not aware of lacrosse… do i sound ■■■■■■■■ asking this or are there more ppl in the country who don’t know what this is? i was hoping penn cc kids could answer b/c most of you dont live around here. thanks!

Lacrosse is one of the most interesting alternative sports out there. It is basically soccer but with nets. The nets are on poles that you use to catch and throw the ball. Its really fast pace cause the ball is small and you have the extension of the pole. Lacrosse players play with very little gear like rugby players. Its fun to watch... very few pauses.

I think cause its such a rough sport mostly guys play it, though women teams exists. I havent seen any. There is generally no rules about pole use I believe (I may be wrong) except to not hit people offensively with it. Blocking with it, hitting other sticks away is okay...

I'm from the Boston area and lacrosse (aka lax) is pretty big here. My school and schools all over my area have both boys and girls teams. Other big sports at least at my school are soccer, ice hockey, track and field hockey. We have other sports too of course, (I don't play any of the said sports) but those seem to be the ones with the most following at least at the high school level. For professional sports tons of people follow the Red Sox and the Patriots. I know some people who follow the Revs (soccer) and not so many the Bruins (I myself am a HABS fan, haha I'm a traitor)

I have never heard of professional lacrosse, but it is huge in high school.

wow I just sort of went off on a tangent there.

Yes, very big on Long Island. I am reading a book called, The Tender Bar, about growing up in Manhasset, Long Island. The auther says,
[quote]
My hometown was famous for two things—lacrosse and liquor. Year in, year out, Manhasset produced a disproportionate number of superb lacrosse players and a still-greater number of distended livers.

Everyone knows the best laxers come from Baltimore ;)

Theres two professional leagues, the NLL and the MLL. NLL is box lacrosse, basically more pads and indoors...the MLL is outdoors and much better in my opinion.

Everyone plays it in Maryland, when you're 6 you're signed up for the youth leagues and then the really nice kids get schollys to the prep schools and go to D1. We actually play with a good amount of gear. Light shoulderpads, pretty sturdy arm guards, hockey-ish gloves and helmets...some puss's like to wear rib pads and cups.

I'm a girl and I play lacrosse! Girls lacrosse is a lot less rough than guys, and therefore not as fun to watch. We don't wear any protection except eye masks and mouth guards, so we can't hit each other like guys can.

letmepass- do you go to homewood to watch them and all? My lacrosse team in Baltimore used to go every weekend. My grandfather played for Hopkins...but I hold strong ties to Maryland. Both are awesome.

And I'm stuck playing for GT, oh well...its lacrosse.

jai alai? its like partnered racquetball except with curved bats that need your wrist-flicking power to hit the balls against the wall. its interesting - but very difficult to master

lol pyar - doesnt sound like u know tooo much abt it either. lol im jp.
anyway, at least now i know its a legit sport that ppl actually play/watch/etc. thanks guys, i knew i could count on u all. lol
