DD2 is looking for colleges strong in the above mentioned areas. Prefers East Coast, alto jazz sax lead in her hs jazz band. She is currently a Junior, top 3% of class, high PSATs soph year. Does NOT want preppy atmosphere, edgy more like it. She does not, yet, want to major in music per se but will for sure at a minimum participate in jazz ensembles, etc. Thank you in advance for suggestions!

Columbia has a major program in jazz. (Google “jazz at Columbia.”) I would expect any Ivy to have a good language program.

There’s a jazz program at the Eastman school at Rochester.

Oberlin is renowned for both music and jazz. I once met a jazz trumpet player in Shanghai who had studied music and Chinese at Oberlin.

Anthony Braxton has established his own, uniquely academic approach to jazz while at Wesleyan. Just as in the film and television industry and increasingly in indie music, there’s a “Wesleyan Mafia” among jazz performers.
