LACs and Writing Score On Standardized Testing

<p>Debruns, thanks. I have noticed that most schools don’t count it all or count it very little. I don’t even get what the English/essay score is all about. I mean why bother calculating it if few schools are considering the number.</p>

Here is part of what Reed has to say about it:In particular, we examine the scores we see from the SAT and ACT writing exams, knowing (as I have stated already) that Reed students will almost never encounter an analogous, time-constrained essay exam in a Reed class. Our concerns about the SAT and ACT writing sections mirror those raised by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Like the NCTE, we worry that the standardized and time-limited nature of the ACT and SAT essay exams encourage a kind of artificial, mechanized, writing-for-the-test that seems antithetical to the reflective and analytical writing taught in a rigorous liberal arts curriculum.

<p>Is this how most schools feel about it? If this is the case why are kids paying for this section, and taking this section? What is the purpose?</p>
