LACs + computer science?

I want to apply to one LAC and I like Vassar but I'm not sure if it has a good CS program which I'm planning on majoring in. Does it have a good computer science program, is it decent? Are there opportunities for internships/research? If not are there other LAC's with good CS programs?

Colgate: decent (as you asked) because it’s well established, 2 CS related majors, research opportunities, and a superb top 20 LAC with a core curriculum, a most beautiful campus and terrific alumni outcomes.

Go to colgate.edu, academics, majors, CS and see for yourself.

Go 'gate!

Vassar’s CS course catalog is here: <a href=“Computer Science - Courses and Requirements | Vassar College”>http://computerscience.vassar.edu/courses/

However, some of the more advanced courses appear to be offered infrequently, according to the schedule here: https://secure3.vassar.edu/cgi-bin/geninfo.cgi (class sizes are also shown)

Holy Cross-great LAC with nice campus 1 hour from Boston. HC HAS FANTASTIC alumni network.

But almost every CS course other than the introductory courses at Holy Cross is offered only once every two years: http://academics.holycross.edu/mathcs/courses

I worked at IBM in the Mid-Hudson Valley for a few years in the 90s, and can’t say Vassar was well known for CS at the time. After spending a few minutes looking at the program, it seems fine, though. I know Marist in Poughkeepsie gets a lot of support from IBM, so perhaps Vassar does to.

Union in Schenectady has a CS program with a pretty good reputation.

I went to Holy Cross and majored in math/cs and was able to land a job with Microsoft in Seattle during the boom years and now am semi-retired.

According to Rugg’s Guide, both Vassar and Colgate are “Tier I” for CS. My understanding is that the two schools are quite differently culturally, so, as always, first-hand visits are essential. Good luck!

Harvey Mudd has a great CS program. Also it is part of the Claremont colleges which gives you a lot of opportunities.
