I like the typical LAC environment, but want to be near or in a major city. What are some LACs that are in urban or suburban areas? They can be right in the city like NYU, in a nice suburb like University of Miami, or somewhere in between like Columbia. The only two LACs I know of like this are Occidental and Macalester. Davidson might count, since it's on the very outskirts of Charlotte.

barnard? thats pretty much in the urban area

Haverford and Swartmore- suburbs of Philadelphia. Macalester in St. Paul.

Trinity College in Hartford

All of the Philly LACs (Swarthmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr) are located in very nice old close-in "inside the beltway" neighborhoods with train access to downtown Philly. Swarthmore's train station is in the middle of campus -- in fact, the college now owns the old train station building and my daughter had a seminar class there last semester. Bryn Mawr's and Haverford's train stations are located very near campus -- basically just walk out to the main road.

Wellesley is located in a similar neighborhood just "outside the beltway" near Boston, also with train access to downtown, although the station is not quite as close to campus.

Davidson is about 30 minutes north of Charlotte, but in a more "suburban" location. I don't think there is much in the way of public transportation.

The Claremont Colleges (Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Claremont-McKenna, Scripps, Pitzer) are located in a suburban area east of Los Angeles -- probably 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. Again, not much in the way of public transportation.

Barnard is located in Manhatten, adjacent to Columbia.

Portland Oregon has Reed college and Lewis & Clark

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention the Claremont colleges and the LACs in Philly in my original post. I'm male, so Barnard and Wellesley are out of the picture.

Rhodes College in Memphis

Colorado College is in Colorado Springs (pop. ca. 360,000).

Some other LACs in small cities:

Lawrence Univ. is in Appleton, WI (pop. ca. 70,000)

Kalamazoo Coll. is in Kalamazoo, MI (pop. ca. 75,000)

Others: Occidental, Trinity U(Texas), Goucher College, Loyola U (MD), Case Western, U of Puget Sound, Wesleyan, Wheaton (MASS), Santa Clara U, Lake Forest, Clark U

yea, Santa Clara U is a nice Jesuit LAC in the heart of Silicon Valley, with a CalTrain station across the street that can take students to San Francisco. St. Mary's College is in the East Bay (Moraga) and USF is another Jesuit school right in San Francisco.

Sarah Lawrence is pretty close to the city.
