LACs keep kicking me in the teeth and I'm scared for the rest

You are a competitive applicant. Your stats and ECs are good. With great essays you could get accepted to any of these schools

Just got waitlisted at Hamilton- not great but at least I didn’t get denied like the rest! Not looking forward to Middlebury and Wesleyan tomorrow (REALLY hoping for wes ~X( )

Thanks for the update.
Did you meet with your GC to see if there was any red flag?
Are you willing to try and apply to a few more LACs and universities?
Or would you rather take a Gap year?
Have you talked with your parents

@MYOS1634 my parent actually had the opportunity to talk to the dean of admissions at Williams, and he said that there wasn’t a red flag, but my UW gpa is on the low side, and they just didn’t have room. I think I’ll be fine going to Mac or Brandeis, but I would absolutely DIE if Wesleyan let me in (I ended up actually submitting for the Hamilton prize too). Maybe I should have ED’d? Unfortunately, I think tomorrow is gonna be a one-two rejection punch.

You have two great choices already so if you get any others just consider it to be icing on the cake!!

Mac and Brandeis are two terrific options regardless of what happens tomorrow. Start planning your visits there, this way if you’re denied you’ll have something to keep you busy.

Denied from both Wesleyan and Middlebury today. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Six rejections hurts real bad

Nothing is wrong with you. The You applied to a group of hyper-competitive schools. Know that the rejections are not a rejection of you as a person nor or they a reflection of of what you have accomplished. It is simply that admissions officers have to fill a class as best they can and there are not enough spots for all worthy candidates.

In the meantime you have two excellent acceptances. Mac and Brandeis can both provide you with a great four year experience and get you where you want to go in life. Many people would love to be in your shoes.

I’m very sorry. :frowning:
Yes it really, really hurts. Allow yourself a mourning period.

You have Macalester and Brandeis, two terrific options.
Start planning overnights there.
Watch videos, join the Facebook groups.

OP: Are Brandeis & Macalester realistic options for you from a financial standpoint ?

Have you heard from Vassar ?

P.S. I understand that Williams College is ultra selective, but as a double legacy with a 34 ACT & a 3.7/4.15 GPA, I think that your teacher recs and/or your essays did not help.

@Publisher I’m gonna get denied from Vassar, but I hear it on Tuesday. I can swing Brandeis and Macalester because my twin just committed to vtech (in state with a scholarship) instead of Syracuse, so my family has a little more wiggle room for me in terms of choosing. I mean for Williams that’s probably true, but I’ve been a writing center tutor and always done great in English, and everyone who read my essay said it was solid. I think it’s my UW gpa (3.69), and my teacher recs (I go to a huge and bad public school and all of my recs were template-based because of it) that sunk me. I think I’m just gonna have to make the best of my two options.

Also, maybe the fact that a Williams College double legacy did not apply ED sent a message that it was not your first choice school–especially for one not applying for financial aid.

As for others evaluating your essay, do they know what makes a great admissions essay ?

What did you write about in your essay ? PM me if you prefer.

also also also: basic statistics: these are all schools with very low admissions rates. They turn down more than 80% of the people who apply, the vast majority of whom are like you: entirely credible applicants, with a lot to offer and who would do very well at the school. It gets down to splitting hairs. It could just as likely be that if you had been from a different region or had a different EC or were interested in a different major. As most people here are saying, there is no way to know what factor might have flipped it, but it is not not a referendum on you as a person or as a student.

I’d recommend you stop concerning yourself with “what may have gone wrong” and start focusing on what went right to get you acceptances into Mac and Brandeis AND how fortunate you are that they are both affordable options.

You have 5 options as of now, correct…

Macalester
Brandeis
Mary Washington
JMU
UVM

Congratulations!!

still waiting on Vassar?

That is a great list of acceptances… it sounds like JMU and UVM may be bigger than you like?

Nothing is wrong with you. The elite LACS have very few seats and by the time they take URM, recruited athlete, first gen, Posse, Questbridge and legacy quota, there are few seats left for unhooked students. You need more than great GPA, stats and ECs these days. Look at all your opportunities and go where you can do your best work. The school doesn’t make you. You can be successful wherever you go. Keep your chin up. Keep calm and carry on and be proud of your good work to date. Good Luck!

You got into 5 good schools?! Don’ complain…

Williams has always been super selective, and from what I’m reading (we’re just starting the process), things have only gotten way harder since I applied to college almost 30 years ago. With your stats, I you would have been a shoe-in for Hamilton back then. But let me tell you from experience - it really doesn’t matter so much where you go to school as how hard you work in life. If you work hard, are an honest and caring person, you’re going to do well. And you’re going to get an excellent education.

@Trixy34, LAC’s such as Bates, Colby, Hamilton, Middlebury, Vassar, Wesleyan, amongst others, have all been top-20 LAC’s since USNWR rankings started in mid-1980’s. Yes, every top ranked LAC’s avg. scores have continued to rise to stratospheric levels, but I don’t think OP’s profile would have been a shoe-in at any of these back then either. That said, OP has two top ranked choices in Brandeis and Macalater.

Hamilton was nowhere near as selective as Williams, Middlebury or Wesleyan back in 89 when I applied. I deferred and ended up in the next year’s class, which had a reputation for being much less selective. Hamilton did drop in rankings after that and was out of the top 20 for a number of years. I went there for 4 years - I’m telling you, my classmates did not have those stats. Heck, I didn’t even have those stats, but I was from a little public school in the boonies. We only had one AP offering. But I was probably among the stronger candidates academically. Of course, many of my classmates had private school education and/or a lot of money, which probably gave them a boost, but I still maintain OPs stats would have been very strong for Hamilton back then.
Anyway, as you point out, yes OP has gained admission to excellent schools and clearly has a bright future!
