LACs not too competitive, snobby, or too far north!

I second College of Charleston.

I second Goucher and St. Mary’s. Some of the schools mentioned are going to be reaches. I’m thinking of Skidmore and Franklin and Marshall, but maybe you should try for them.

Has anyone mentioned Elon?

How about Trinity University in San Antonio?

Occidental College
New College of Florida

Pitzer, Oxy, Rhodes. All good recommendations.

I second/third St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

This is Maryland’s public “honors college”. Beautiful campus, gorgeous setting, good academics, nice kids. Cheaper at full-pay rates than some of its private peers. A little remote in its location near the mouth of the Potomac River (rural waterfront, about 1.5 hours by car south of Baltimore).

While Trinity in SA fits the description, those SATs would put this young lady in the bottom 25%, making it a reach.

Elon, U of Mary Washington, College of Charlestown, Washington College. I suggest that all students considering changing regions in any direction do an overnight stay before committing, as many who feel welcomed on the tour later feel out of place.

Within PA, Muhlenberg, Susquehanna, Juniata and F&M have excellent reputations for warmth among students and between students and faculty and a down to earth atosphere, although the preprofessional programs at F&M engender a lot of competition.

Birmingham Southern

Samford U

Springhill

What can you afford?

Centre, in Kentucky.

Birmingham Southern - and they have guaranteed merit aid for certain GPA/test scores (as do many other schools)

Southwestern in Georgetown Texas, just north of Austin.
Really nice.

Grinnell

10char

It sounds like you attended the Fall Open Weekend at Dickinson that just passed. My S and I did as well but we came away with very different impressions. The president played a corpse in a school play; he has weekly hours in local coffee houses; and he has a viral video on YouTube. Our tour guide was named Libby. At least 20 people stopped us and her on our tour to say hello. She was wonderful. Like you, we didn’t warm to the head of admissions but we had a very useful session with our local recruiter (Greg Moyer). However, we were floored when someone from the audience asked the panal of students what they did for fun and basically got no response. That was amazing and certainly unusual. Nonetheless, S liked Dickinson a great deal. That said, if your D didn’t feel it was a fit, it isn’t.

Looking south of PA:

Washington College, Goucher, Elon, College of Charleston, Guilford, Roanoke College, Queens University of Charlotte, UNC-Ashville, Eckerd College, U of Mary Washington

Loyola New Orleans. Its NOT snobby. Its a SUPERB school. Its adjacent to Tulane, uptown New Orleans, gorgeous campus.

In Virginia, look at Bridgewater College…a wonderful little LAC with some amazing programs. Its bucolic…in the Shenandoah Valley, just 10 miles south of JMU. Pretty campus. Really good professors who really care and they spend a lot of time with students on personal development. Plus they have a wonderful Equestrian facility, and they provide the horses! Its DIII athletics, fun but not over the top.

Down the road a piece look at Roanoke College and Hollins University. Both excellent schools. Hollins has a fabulous creative writing program for young women. In Staunton Virginia, look at Mary Baldwin. Stunning and historic campus in old town Staunton.

Belmont Abbey just outside of Charlotte, NC. Also a really good school that is up and coming.

Pay ZERO attention to rankings and prestige. You seem like you are really looking for a good fit. These are all schools that are wonderful academic schools, not too hardcore (intense) and they are not preppy.

^^Oh yes, I had read good things about Bridgewater College. I forgot about that school.

clamchowder, you are joking about Grinnell, I assume. She’s wants somewhere warm. Many adjectives can discribe Grinnell, Iowa but warm isn’t one of them - not in the winter anyway.

Check the common data set for each of the schools your daughter is considering to see where she falls academically compared to the pool of admitted students.

Furman looks like it will fit your search , very well regarded LAC in South Carolina

[Furman: Engaged Learning at a Leading Liberal Arts University](<a href=“Furman University | Top Private Liberal Arts University in Greenville, SC”>Furman University | Top Private Liberal Arts University in Greenville, SC)

Good Luck!
