You are correct. My S was waitlisted. Given his standard test scorces and the earlier mail regarding STEM from Lafayette, we were very surprised by this. Nonetheless, both he and I wish all of you who have been accepted the best.

D got package the other day, she’s accepted with the largest offer we have seen. We are going down to visit next week. I’m very impressed with their offer. I was surprised that it all came in grants and $5500 in loans. I would have thought it might include a scholarship. D has very good stats. But money’s money. $2000 work study offered as well. Looks like Lafayette moves into 1st place above RPI $27000, Bucknell $31000, Pitt $27000, Drexel $21000 and Clarkson $34000. Lafayette $44000! Hope Lafayette is as good as they say for engineering. 12th in the nation for undergrad only schools. 9-1 student faculty ratio. 35th in the nation for top LAC and Universities. Dorms rated very high as well. Hope it’s as nice as they say. Good luck, everyone. The really nice packages seem to be out there for people.

Eleanor500, congratulations to your daughter! I’m a little confused, though… what would you consider the difference to be between “grants” and “scholarships”? I’m guessing you mean grants would be need-based, and scholarships would be merit-based? Either way, as you said, money is money!

Also, make sure you’re not just comparing how much they offer you in aid, but what the bottom line cost will be. For example, a Lafayette offer of $44k would leave you a net cost of about $9k for next year. That IS a bargain :)

And yes, Lafayette’s engineering programs are very well-respected. ;)

Thanks Lafalum84. Yes it is a bargain and I think D will jump on it. $9000 is workable, much better than RPI’s $30000 and Bucknell’s $18000 that was left for me to pay.

Congrats to all! S1 is Jr at Lafayette and he loves it there. The opportunities for research in engineering have been great for him. He is currently presenting at an under grad research conference at Cornell and is going to another in DC in a week. Small classes, great facilities, nice kids as well. S2 was accepted for the Fall and now has to decide between WPI, RPI, Laf and Rose-Hulman. We are in NJ outside of Phila and he is not sure he wants to be so close to home or follow his brother. Good luck to all.

Congratulations to all admitted! My dd is a freshman engineering student and is having a great year. I’m very happy that this is the college she ended up at.

Congrats Eleanor500! In our case, the numbers worked exactly the opposite. Lafayette was 5th out of 5 for all facets: actual scholarship/merit dollars, loan amounts, and cash-out-of-pocket price. And the difference was very significant. No way on Earth is it worth a $12,000-14,000 cash difference over RPI/WPI (not even counting the loans).

Glad for your D though, sounds like she’s got that all-important favorite-college/best-$ match and will be very happy there!

Congrats to everyone else who was accepted! Lafayette is an amazing school! I absolutely love it; I’ve been visiting the college for almost a decade now, and so I’m really comfortable there. I’m taking Musical Theatre this semester as a high school student and it is wonderful (we just went to NYC today).
The only thing holding me back from actually going is my favourite school in the UK, which won’t let me know about financial aid until July (that’s when I get my IB results). BUT! I’m still placing my deposit at Laf first, and, well, there’s always a year of study abroad!
Just wondering: is anyone here in as a Marquis Scholar too?

My D is a Marquis Scholar, I am an alum. D struggling in deciding between Wm and Mary and Lafayette College. LC offers $20k scholarship, putting the price about $11k below Wm and Mary. LC less than 2 hours from home, 4th highest starting and mid-career salaries of any liberal arts college, high placement in law and med schools. D undecided on major but strong in science and math. She loved Wm and Mary campus/friendliness last weekend at Admitted Students Day. But it is 9 hours away by car, more expensive and more remote to cities/events than LC where you can be in NYC in an hour. She liked Wm and Mary size-5500 vs. 2400 students. Clock is ticking, score is tied at this point.

Frankur, my son had a tough decision at this time last year. Wesleyan was his top choice up to his accepted student overnight when he just KNEW that it was the wrong place for him. That overnite had him second guessing the whole process and at one point, he considered taking a gap year or even staying home and commuting to a local college. The Marquis scholarship helped him to decide on Laf. Knowing that the college had chosen him was a big factor. He worried that he didn’t immediately fall in love with the school but now that he is nearing the end of freshman year, even my husband who wasn’t happy with his choice, admits that it was the right choice. Good luck to your daughter with her decision.

Thanks for the reply. I am a bit prejudiced as an alumni of LC, but want her to make the best choice for her. She didn’t get to do the overnight at Wm and Mary but we have spent a fair bit of time there. Polite, friendly kids, beautiful campus.
A similar event to your son’s happened with her best friend doing an overnight at Lehigh this weekend, where she came home saying it is not the right school for her, and has switched to Lafayette, which was her 2nd choice. Felt uncomfortable with the people, had none of these feelings at LC.
8 days to go, I am sure the light will go on!

frankur, Lafayette vs William & Mary was my decision “back in the day” as well! From my screen-name you can see which I chose.

Met my husband at Lafayette, and now our son is a senior there. Ironically, he almost didn’t go to Lafayette because we were both alum and he wanted his “own” place. I had to remind him that we live almost 300 miles away, and that his time there would be HIS time regardless of his parents’ past adventures. Our memories of our time at Lafayette are real and valid for us - but they really didn’t mean anything about his college experience, and once we would drop him off it would be HIS experience no matter what college he went to. In the end, he has truly enjoyed his 4 years there and is not looking forward to graduation.

OTOH, our daughter did not even apply to Lafayette - she didn’t feel it was right for her and I agreed (although H thought it was a good place for her). She is also very happy attending the college she chose. It’s all about what is right for each kid. Good luck to your daughter in making the decision that is right for her.

(PS - Of COURSE your daughter’s friend picked Lafayette over Lehigh… what a no-brainer )

Thanks 84. great points. You guys got to it quicker as I am class of 75 with a senior and a freshman in HS. I don’t necessarily want her recreating some of my adventures as it was the 70’s!
My daughter is somewhat jokingly afraid of the ‘cult’-the successive generations that go to LC or other schools. She sees us celebrate our private college weekend each year with 7-8 Lafayette friends (still one of our favorite weekends of the year), some who have had their children graduate LC, and perhaps she wants to make her own path. But you are right, the path is hers either at LC or Wm and Mary.

My name is Vanessa and I’m a senior from Los Angeles. I just committed to Lafayette today, so I just wanted to see if I can meet anyone from LA also heading east – or anyone else in the Class of '15!
I went to Prologue 2011 last weekend, so I know a couple of people. :)

We definitely should get a Facebook group/page started. Feel free to add me or talk to me!
