Lafayette Questions: Part II

Minky,

We stayed in the Quality Inn in 8/2005 and had a horrible experience -- never will stay there again. We have not stayed at the Comfort Inn so can't give you an opinion on that one.

When we travel up to visit, we usually stay at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Bethlehem -- travel time is about 15 minutes from campus. We like it a little better than the Hampton Justin mentioned because it's not a "high rise" and is a little newer ... either choice should be fine. The extra few minutes it takes to travel from the Hampton Inns is well worth it.

What are the differences between the opportunities afforded Marquis and Trustee scholars?

Also what are the differences in opportunities for Trustee scholars and non-scholarship students?

Thanks

aurisphere,

Marquis Scholars are afforded the kinds of opportunities outlined in post #2 of the thread "marquis scholar" in addition to the $16,000/year. Trustee Scholars receive $8,000/year without those additional perks.

As such, there is no difference in opportunities for Trustee Scholars vs. non-scholarship students.

I heard that lafayette decisions have been sent to some international applicants.
Are the accepted ones only getting the emails before others?

Thanks.

karkip,

Don't try to anticipate your admissions decision by the decisions received by others. Just wait and see what happens.

Best of luck!

which is the best major at lafayette?? and what are the prerequisite for research with the professors?? do you get opportunity rt frm the freshman yr?

lafstudent,

It's hard for me to say what the "best" major is at Lafayette. We are best known for our Engineering program, but we have equally strong programs in the natural/social sciences and humanities.

Some of the most popular majors include Engineering, Economics & Business, English, Biology, Psychology, Gov/Law, and Math.

To participate in the EXCEL Scholars Program (Lafayette College - Excel Scholars), one must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum 3.25 GPA. With that said, I did know a first-year student last year who was conducting research with a math professor over the January interim and during the following summer. If a professor sees promise in you, he/she has every right to ask for your assistance with their research; you will simply not receive EXCEL compensation as a first-year student.

hey justin

how to know if my dorm preference form has been received?
can i contact someone??

Megaaadi,

You can either email the Office of Residence Life at reslife@lafayette.edu or, better yet, call them up at (610) 330-5335. Someone will be able to look through the stack of received forms to see if yours is there.

Justin, Lafayette should give you free EVERYTHING for the rest of your college career. You are so good at all things Lafayette!

Here's a housing question: how many people make dorm requests which aren't met? For instance, how many might request Dorm X, but actually get assigned to Dorm Y? Are there dorms which just as good as others, maybe due to location or furnishings? I know which is the BEST dorm, thanks to you!

fencersmother,

The Office of Residence Life doesn't compile data as does Admissions. I honestly can't tell you how many housing preferences are or aren't met. From the sounds of things, most students get a choice that either matches or comes close to their preference. The people in Res Life actually do put a ton of time and effort into matching roommates and assigning housing over the summer months in an attempt to avoid issues in the fall.

Most of the residence halls are comparable in quality and furnishings. Location isn't too much of an issue since we aren't that large of a campus to begin with!

Hi. What do you know about Lafayette's involvement with the Tuition Exchange program?

yesnomaybeso7,

I can tell you that Lafayette does indeed participate in the Tuition Exchange program. If you received a scholarship, you should be receiving more information from Lafayette. I can also tell you that Tuition Exchange is not considered an outside scholarship or award; rather, it is considered part of your award package from the school.

If you have specific questions about this program, direct them to the Office of Financial Aid by phone at 610-330-5055 or by email at financialaid@lafayette.edu.

Justin-
My son is in at Lafayette and trying to sort things out in his mind. He is an engineer and wants to do the extra things that there are at other colleges..helping a FIRST team or a Baja car or something similar project competition wise. Is there any of that at Lafayette? Is there an engineering co-op program? what is the employment rate for engineers?
thanks!

oops, and do they have a robotics program?

fourkidsmom,

Our Mechanical Engineers do participate in Formula SAE. There has also been a Mini Baja team in recent years. A few years ago, a team designed a human-powered submarine to compete at a naval facility in Maryland. See the following portion of the Lafayette website: Leopard Racing 2008.

Engineers in our other areas of study are afforded similar opportunities. Hands-on research is definitely emphasized throughout the curriculum.

Lafayette does not have a co-op program, but does offer a rather extensive selection of internships with Lafayette alumni. Since many Lafayette students graduate with a B.S. degree in Engineering, you can imagine how many opportunities trickle down to our prospective Engineers!

To read about the experiences of current Engineering students at Lafayette, select your major(s) of interest and pages of news stories will be made available: Lafayette LIVE—What's life like on campus?.

I can't give you the employment rate for Engineers. You might consider contacting Career Services. Janine Block is the Informational Specialist, and it's her job to compile post-graduate data; her email is blockj@lafayette.edu. Also, feel free to direct questions to the appropriate department head: Office of the Provost. Any professor would be more than happy to provide you with the information your son may need to make his college decision.

Hey Justin,

I wanted to ask you what exactly is the January interim about?
Is it basically just a two week break or what?
As a first year student, if I plan to stay over at interim, would it be advisable to choose a residence hall like Keefe or Watson which houses interim FYS or is it easy to move in there from another hall?

Thanks,
Ryan

I'm an international student from India.
Right now I like Ruef the best and I'm planning to send in my deposit tomorrow so is it ok if I make a little note at the bottom detailing my preference for Ruef ?

Also which option should I mark on my housing preference form as most important....coed by floor, combination of class yrs, over 100 students or non wellness?

ryanshroff,

The January interim is the period of about one month between the fall and spring semesters. Some students remain on campus for athletics, interim classes, or research with professors. Other students gain an externship with a Lafayette alum for a period of a few days or register for one of our three week interim study abroad courses.

If you plan to stay for the interim, you should seriously consider choosing one of the residence halls that will remain open. Open residence halls that normally house first-year students include Keefe and Watson. If you were to choose Ruef, you would be forced to move to Keefe, Watson, Rubin, Ramer, Fisher East, Fisher West, or Farber for the interim. It isn't too much of an inconvenience to move out, but just keep this information in mind when choosing a residence hall.

If you are particularly interested in Ruef, feel free to leave a note on the Housing Preference Form. The "most important criteria" question is not very helpful in leading you to Ruef, so any option should do.
