Lafayette Questions: Part II

What is the deal with a A.B engineering degree. Can I still take mechincal engineering classes and do the things that the website promise that I will do? Can I stillbe recruited to an engineering firm? Also will it be easier for me to double major?

bostonman2009,

Yes, you can still take Mechanical Engineering courses as an A.B. major to fill elective slots. All of the information on the A.B. Engineering website is reliable, so yes, you can most certainly be recruited by top engineering firms. The A.B. degree also makes it much easier to double-major since the curriculum is less strenuous.

What percent of Lafayette students who apply to med school get in?

TellItToMe,

Your chances of being accepted to medical school depends on your GPA and MCAT scores. With that said, Lafayette students with a 3.6+ GPA and above-average MCAT scores were accepted, on average, at a 90% rate.

Justin,

With the January 1 deadline for regular admission, would the December ACT date be acceptable? ACT says something like 3-6 weeks for scores, and then ordering them after you see them could increase the time. What sort of leeway is there for scores to arrive?

Second question, is the CDS for Lafayette available anywhere?

father05,

Scores from the December ACT test date would not arrive by the January 1st deadline. While there is some leeway in the process, be aware that, for full consideration, applicants should postmark all materials by the published deadline.

Common data sets? This is all that's available online: http://lafayette.edu/admissions/statsfromViewbook.pdf and Lafayette at a Glance.

Hi Justin,
I'm thinking about applying early decision and I was wondering if by applying early decision I am giving up any opportunities to recieve either grant money or scholarship money? I know the Lafayette website says all applicants are considered for money grants equally, but is this really true? Do you know of anyone who has applied early decision and gotten money? Also, how are these money decisions made? (ie. GPA, SAT scores, or other qualifications?)

Thanks so much!

I have a question about housing....
does Res Life assign housing by first come first sirved? In other words,
if you apply ED and get your questionnaire in sooner, do you have a better chance of getting your first choice dorm?

MissInformed,

From the Lafayette Office of Residence Life webpage:

How are room assignments made for incoming students?

First year students are assigned to rooms based on the date of their admission deposit.

So, yes, applying ED does give you a much better shot of being assigned to your top choice. Most college housing offices operate in a similar manner.

Hey, I guess you aren't so misinformed, after all!

Thanks so much for the info!

Remember that Lafayette is one of the few places you can "upgrade" your application to Early Decision during the application process. My kid applied to a handful of schools in early fall, including Lafayette and an Early Decision app to my alma mater (not Laf). When he didn't get in to his Early Decision school, he immediately upgraded his regular app to Early Decision at Lafayette. During his Lafayette interview, he was 100% upfront about the process, and he was accepted at Laf within 2 weeks.

Although I could be wrong (my wife reminds me daily), I think Lafayette has this policy to grab the strong candidates who were turned down Early Decision from some of the elite schools like the Ivies. Just a guess.

lbv001 -- After visiting several schools, our DS decided that Lafayette was his first choice so he applied ED and received a Lafayette grant all 4 years. The amount of the grant was not reduced by outside scholarships. Financial aid is available provided you qualify and meet all of the filing deadlines. As I understand it, the financial aid award, at least the grant and loan end of it, is not affected by the ED or RD application decision.

Hello, Lafparent. Would you mind tell me something about the job orientation for engineering students in Lafayette? Thank you very much.

jessicaxunmeng: I'm not sure I know what you mean by "job orientation." If you're asking about employment prospects, I can tell you they are very good. Our S, a senior this year, had an internship this summer with a large, respected company that resulted in a job offer (accepted). The experiences he had as part of the engineering program at Lafayette played a big part in the company's offer of the internship and job following graduation.
Also, during an early pre-enrollment visit to Lafayette, he spoke with a number of senior engineering students all of whom had already accepted post graduation jobs or had been accepted to graduate school.
Hope this answers your question ... if not, please clarify.

Thank you very much, lafparent.
However, you answer the next question that I want to ask, so thank you again.
I mean what do you think about the internship relates to engineering students ? In other words, Do students there have a lot of chances to participate in social practice relates to engineering?

Lafparent:

Was this the Marquis Scholarship in ED that was awarded?

The Website says:
"Students admitted under both Early Decision and Regular Decision are considered for this scholarship, with final decisions rendered by late March."

But I worry that once your locked into going why would they need to lure you with money?

lbv001,

I responded to your initial post on the topic in the form of a private message. Be sure to check your PM inbox located at the top right corner of the page.

Ahhh........ didn't even know that was there:-)

Thanks

jessicaxunmeng:

lbv001:
He was hoping for a merit scholarship, but no his financial aid did not include the Marquis Scholarship. There were some earlier posts that provided some comparison between ED and RD admits for merit awards. Candyman's response to your question may have provided the link. If not, let me know and I'll look for it.

jessicaxunmeng:
I'm still not really clear -- social experiences for all students at Lafayette and during their internship experiences really depends on the student and what he/she chooses to do. DS has had a wonderful experience at Lafayette, many friends and activities. The same was true during his internship; both he and the other intern in the section were invited to all of the social activities, including the summer picnic.

Thank you Lafparent, your response is useful. Thank you.
