Lafayette Questions: Part II

Justin -- Thanks as always. Just to be clear, my daughter did interview in June with Mr. Bachman on-campus. I think that is why she was a little surprised to hear that an alum would also be contacting her for an off-campus interview.

hudsonvalley51,

I don't think applicants who have had on-campus interviews are usually notified of the opportunity to interview off-campus. You might consider taking a moment tomorrow to call up the Admissions Office at (610) 330-5100 just to make sure they have proof your daughter interviewed with Mr. Bachman.

If the opportunity does come around, however, I encourage your daughter to speak with an alum. Our alumni representatives are great sources of information on anything/everything Lafayette, and I think just hearing about an alum's experiences would be worthwhile.

Hi candyman92486,

My son is interviewing at Lafayette on 12/27. We had visited the campus this past summer and took a tour then. But this will be his dad's first visit there.

Any suggestions for how we should spend our time besides the interview? We are staying at the Gen. Lafayette Inn the night before. We may take the 10 a.m. tour even though two of us have already done a tour. I imagine most of the campus will be shut down.

Thank you SO much for your participation on this site!

jyber209,

Definitely take another tour. You might gain additional insight and form a different impression of the College from a different tour guide.

After the tour and interview, feel free to explore the campus (especially the Allan P. Kirby Sports Center, which isn't included on any tour). Check out any academic buildings of interest and also the Bookstore in the Farinon College Center as well.

You might also consider stopping by the Financial Aid Office in Markle Hall for some information on grants and loans.

Unfortunately, due to the time of your visit, the campus will not seem very lively. Few students and professors are on campus for the interim.

If you'd like to try some college food, I believe Gilbert's Cafe in Kirby House should have limited hours on the 27th (possibly from 8am-4pm).

Is an interview required for Lafayette? DD is planning to submit the Common App for them this week, but she hasn't interviewed.

Thanks so much for the suggestions, Justin!

Interviews are not required, I know a lot of people who got in without an interview. Of course, if you do come to visit and have time on your hands, you might as well schedule an interview.

Thank you!

wackymother,

Basu is correct. Interviews are not required for admission to Lafayette. At this point, it is too late to schedule an on-campus interview with an admissions officer.

However, after your daughter applies, she will be contacted by an alumni admissions representative for an off-campus interview (assuming an alum is available in your area). An off-campus alumni interview is by no means required, but it may provide your daughter with some useful information about the College.

Hi Justin, I have been a lurker at this thread for some time. I am sending my application to Lafayette some time this week but before I do that I want you to help me review my package and offer your precious opinion on my chances. Due to the bulkiness of the material I have sent them to your email at saydej@lafayette.edu. Please help me check them out and give me a reply. Thanx a bunch.

Hey Justin,

It's 5:26 on Christmas morning, and I have spent the past hour reading through this thread. Thanks for answering many of my questions before I even asked them. :)

Anyway, excuse me if I'm incorrect, but I believe I read somewhere in this thread that you're double majoring in English and psych. How would you say the English major is at Lafayette?

Thanks a ton. Merry Christmas!

quocanh1987,

Please give me some time to respond to your email. I am currently swamped with admissions related correspondence, and with the holidays in full swing, it might take me some time to adequately respond to your inquiry.

insanity90,

First question: why in the world aren't you sleeping? I know the holiday season calls for some exciting times, but 5:26 in the morning? You are crazy...end of story!

I researched colleges specifically for strong English programs since I knew that was most likely to be an area of academic interest. I was genuinely impressed with Lafayette's course offerings, and even took the time to sit in on a few upper-level English courses. If you can visit the campus sometime during the week in the Spring semester, be sure to observe a course or two and arrange a meeting with a professor through Admissions.

The professors, of course, make the department. They are all experts in their fields, and as a whole they cover almost all scholarly realms of research. Small classes allow them to really get to know the majors. On more than one occasion, I have stopped by the third floor of Pardee Hall just to drop by the offices of my English professors. They are the kind of people who invite students to their houses for dinner (no joke!), and it makes for a very personal experience.

Internship opportunities for majors abound. If you are interested in journalism, TV communications, or publishing you won't be disappointed. English majors are always encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to gain real-world experience.

The English department website contains a wealth of information on course offerings, professors (with emails...feel free to ask questions!), departmental events, and more. Check it out when you have some free time: English Department: Lafayette College.

As an English major, rest assured you'll do a ton of writing and be challenged to think outside the box. It's not all about the Classics anymore, and our courses on modern poetry, the Beat Generation, and creative writing serve as great complements to our courses on medieval literature and literary theory. You'll definitely leave Lafayette with a respectable knowledge of the literature and, even more importantly, with an ability to effectively present your thoughts in writing.

If you think of any specific questions after perusing the English department website, do not hesitate to ask.

Is the application to Lafayette postdated? Is it OK to get it postmarked by JAN 1? Or must it reach the office by Jan 1.

I read about the major choices back posts. If I choose Biology, will it hurt my chances? Actually I was considering neuroscience as well, so which one will help me up?

SkyGirl,

All application materials must be postmarked no later than January 1st in order to be considered. As such, it need not reach the office by January 1st.

As for your second question, it all depends. If your stats are average for a Lafayette applicant, then choosing a more popular major such as Biology will certainly not help your chances of admission. I'd check Neuroscience if I were you, provided you can back up that choice with your essays, extracurriculars, etc. You can, of course, always change your intended major once you are a current student.
