Lafayette. Social life. The type of student body. Will I fit in?

<p>Since I'm applying ED1 here, I've been looking at student reviews of the people at Lafayette. What I've mainly found is that majority of people describe the student body as "preppy". Either that, or very conserved, hardworking engineering, and/or science students who don't really prefer to socialize all that much. Now, I don't want to make any judgments, I am only posting what I found on the reviews.</p>

<p>I'm a musician and a poet. I have a deep passion for art, music, poetry, anything to do with the aesthetics. The type who'll be willing to stay up all night just to discuss Plato, happiness, your vision of a good life etc. I believe in fully expressing my individuality and "not following the crowd."</p>

<p>However, I am not (all the time) philosophical and what some people might consider "boring", you know, someone that even talks in poetry. I do like to socialize, meet new people, make friends, and party hard. People tell me I'm really fun to be around and that I have a great sense of humor, oh well.</p>

<p>I'm pursuing an engineering degree. Well, based on what I've written so far, that might come as a surprise. I have a logical, analytical/technical side too. I have a knack for Physics.</p>

<p>I don't have a shred of narcissism. On the contrary, I think everyone has something they're good at, something they're proud of. I believe that it is not right to "look down" on anyone.</p>

<p>So there. Based on what I've written, do you think I'll fit in with the student body of Lafayette College? I'm very curious.</p>

<p>I think most everyone finds people they fit in with at Lafayette. And to me it seems like people with different interests mesh together really well My D plays in the school orchestra, is very involved with theater. surprised us and joined a sorority (where she feels she fits in great with the other girls), and she is also a science major doing research with a professor. She has close friends with majors ranging from art to engineering and with activities ranging from varsity football to theater — really all over the map. I think you will be fine there. </p>

<p>My son is majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Philosophy and lives on the Music Appreciation Floor and participates in numerous musical groups. He sounds similar to you. I don’t get the feeling that the school is preppy. You can definitely find your tribe on campus.</p>

<p>@bp0001: I think your son must have called me for a donation yesterday evening for the student Phonathon. He identified himself as a ME / Philosophy double major… only at Lafayette. If I had been thinking more quickly, I would have asked him what he thought about the ethics of artificial intelligence. </p>

<p>He does make those calls. I don’t know where he finds the time for all of his activities.</p>

<p>Thank you for the replies, happy1 and bp001. That’s good to hear. </p>

I’m a sophomore engineering student and one of the reasons I chose Laf is because there really is a place for everyone. I’m a engineering student but I still work in the theatre department and socialize like everyone else. I know atleast with the friend groups I’ve encountered, there’s always a unique balance of kids who study science yet can be super artsy. As a liberal arts and engineering school, some people choose to come here because they love the liberal arts but also want to still major in a science, which is sometimes hard at an institute of technology or polytechnic type of school. Yes, I won’t deny that some people here can be preppy, as shown in the vineyard vines and boating shoes around campus, but that’s not everyone. Just from your short description, I can already come up with several people who I could see you hanging out with.

One of the benefits of a liberal arts and engineering education, you don’t have to subject yourself to either one or the other. You can have a perfect mix and a lot of people here are. I know my coworkers in the theatre department are either physics majors or english majors yet they probably “party hard”, as you put it, as much as any other friend group. And the engineers at Laf definitely have a social life. Several participate in greek life and those of us who arent still socialize just as much.

Hope this helps!
