Any opinions?

Lafayette College: Marquis Scholarship ($20,000 a year), good research opportunities due to small size and emphases on undergraduates, legacy

Wake Forest: One of my top schools, great neuroscience program, really expensive

I think my parents would be able to pay full price for Wake Forest (I likely won't get any scholarships or financial aid), but it's hard to turn down money to my mom's alma mater, expecially since I'm hoping to go to med school. My mom didn't pressure me to apply to Lafayette, but now that I have money to go there, it is definitely her top choice.

Basically, if I go to Lafayette, there is a chance my parents will put money towards med school. But I don't know if my opportunites for research/med school will be as good if I go to Lafayette, because Wake Forest would have better networking.

Any advice would be AWESOME!!

Also, I'm planning on majoring in neuroscience/pre med with a minor in studio art. And I'm not a fan of cold weather, so North Carolina definitely is better for me in that regard...

I say laf. Because u ll have less debt and in the long run you’ll be happier.both great schools but if you really want to go to med school lag is the best option

Second Lafayette. I don’t think Wake is worth the extra money, especially if you are considering going to med school. Lafayette is a hidden gem imo.

Thanks for the input!

I guess what I really have to decide is whether I’d rather be a top student at a “lesser” school (I do like Lafayette, but it certainly doesn’t have to resources or prestige that a larger school like wake forest has) or an average student at a more prestigious school.

Also, Wake Forest has always been one of my top choices along with Duke (rejected), WashU (waitlisted), and UNC Chapel Hill (waitlisted), and I was super excited about getting accepted!

For med school gpa is a very large factor.so…

In my view Wake and LC are peers for undergrad with some nods in favor of LC:
Lafayette Wake
4 yr grad 89% 83%
Retention 95% 94%
Stud/Faculty 11:1 11:1
Endow/student $289k $143k
ROI #22 #54
US News 39 LAC 27 Nat’l U

If you like LC it seems a clear choice given the $$ difference.

Thanks for the replies!

I just found out about a couple more scholarships, which makes my decision a lot more difficult.

Oberlin: $16,000 per year, but I’ve never visited… And Ohio seems really chilly.

Bucknell University: $20,000 Presidential Scholarship, and again I’ve never visited, but I’ve been reading a lot about it and it seems like a really awesome school.

Again, any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Wow congratulations on your great acceptances. The merit money would be enough for me to tell my kid to take Wake Forest out of the running! I am sure Wake Forest would be great for the neuroscience and the weather but It would take a lot for me to think it is worth $80,000 more! I have a D that graduated from Bucknell (cell bio/biochem) last year who did very well there (also merit scholarship), first hand research and is now in a fully funded MD/phD program and had multiple interviews coming straight out of Bucknell. I now have a son at Lafayette. Both great schools. The Marquis scholars have additional perks and study abroad opportunities for summer and January terms which are amazing for Lafayette students, I know that Marquis scholars get one these programs for free. Neuroscience is very popular at all of these schools so your undergraduate opportunities at any of these schools will be sufficient for med school or graduate school. I think you should visit both Bucknell and Lafayette and compare to Wake Forest before you make any final decision. For med school admissions, all of these schools do well as long as you maintain a high GPA wherever you go.
Again - Congratulations, sounds like you will do great wherever you go. From what I’ve heard Bucknell and Wake Forest have similar campuses. If you really like Wake Forest, don’t hesitate to let them know that you were offered prestigious scholarships at Bucknell and lafayette. They may come up with some money for you!!! Good luck.
