I'm applying to many UC's. However, since the bio. program at UC Berkeley is very weak, I've decided to choose psychology as my major (instead of bio.) However, for the other Uc's I'm applying to, I'm not (I'm choosing bio.--for San Diego, Davis, Santa Barbara, and Irvine).

So my question is....would this strike the admission people as odd..?? How I'm choosing two different majors????

I would say no. Many students choose different majors at different UC's because some of the UC's don't offer specific majors that others do. For example: for Berkeley, my major is Astrophysics, but when I applied to Davis I had to put down Math because Davis doesn't have an astrophysics major.

Where in the world did you hear that? Bio is extremely strong at Berkeley. Heck, if it's program quality you're concerned about, you should realize that Berkeley psych is much weaker among psych programs nationwide than Berkeley bio is among bio programs nationwide.

I've heard that the bio. program is not that strong because Berkeley tends to focus more on engineering, chemistry, or business. Also, Berkeley doesn't have a 'biology' major but specific ones, and I don't want that (I'm just looking for a general biology major).

So what's so bad about the psych. program? :( Details please!

Virtually every "program" at Berkeley is incredibly strong. That includes everything from Classics to Physics and Education to EECS.

There is nothing short of spectacular about Berkeley's psych program. Top 5 for sure. However, it is nowhere near as good as say the UCLA or Stanford psych programs. There's some pretty big achievement gaps at the top of the psych food chain.

Both bio and psych at Berkeley are really strong. People generally take Molecular-Cell Biology (most popular bio) and they are generally pre-meds. It's one of the largest majors on campus. Another popular one is Integrative Biology, which is more ecologically-focused and easier. Psych is impacted meaning not everyone who wants in can get in. You have to apply for it. Anyway, whether you put down psych or bio for Berkeley's app makes no difference, so don't worry about it. You will still be considered undeclared and you can even choose something completely difference once you get here.

Psych is also a pretty popular premed major. Sometimes it seems like half the undergrads in psych are premed and are double majoring in psych and mcb.

I don't think each UC sees what you marked as a major for the other schools. I marked undeclared for every school except UCSD (where I applied as a biochemistry major,) and I got accepted into both.

The admissions people would have NO IDEA. The Cal admissions people only see your Cal application. They compare data between campuses after the fact, but only after the fact, and potential major, if I remember correctly, isn't one of the points of datum (more like SAT I verbacl score, GPA, number of AP/honors courses, etc).
