each person has their own dresser in landis??

Yep, from what the fac dir wrote, each person has thier own dresser. I thought everyone got their own dresser and closet no matter what dorm they were in. Maybe some dorms are set up different. Anyone know for sure?

Yup, that is the norm. Each person has his/her own dresser and desk in every dorm building.

D is there summer, and every room she has been in in a dorm open for summer has had a desk, chair, dresser, bed and closet for each student. And a bookcase that can sit on top of the desk. The triples are rather large in Gilchrist and Reynolds, as she has friends in triples in both dorms, and has been in doubles in Gilchrist, Wildwood, Degraf, Reynolds, and Cawthon. She has only been in triples that have their own bath, which she thinks is most of the triples in Gilchrist and Reynolds, and they have had 2 fridges each. She thought that the triples were very roomy in these older dorms that have been redone. She is in a double for summer that shares a bath with a single, but she is pretty sure her double for fall shares with another double.

The most unpredictable rooms are the ones on the top floors of the older redone dorms like Landis, Gilchrist etc. The have dormer windows, odd roof lines, and it makes for some funny shaped and sometimes smaller rooms.

It is possible that in some of the older dorms that have not been redone, doubles or triples might share a closet or dresser. I know the doubles in Smith are small. But I though each dorm student had their own dresser and closet.

sweet...for some reason I thought that we were only given a closet, in terms of storage. Having a dresser definitely changes my closet storage plans.

thanks for all the info!

Just remember the "dresser" is a small chest of drawers. You may want to purchase additional plastic storage drawers that can be stored under your bed. (Can be found at Target, Lowes, etc) The closet is also quite small and purchasing a hanging rod that makes double hanging possible in the closet will allow for utilizing the most from your closet.

yeah, I was planning on that double hanging rod...I was also going to get one of those hanging things (like the kind they have for shoes), only bigger, for my pants and sweaters. But now I don't really need it if there's drawer space.

The dresser in my D's room is at least 4 ft high with five drawers. It is roomy, really. We were expecting a 24" closet, and it is 36". She didn't need her hanging "thing" for clothes yet as the drawers were roomy. Now come fall and the need for a wardrobe for hot then cold weather might change things. That is where having the bed up a bit and getting storage for under the bed should help.

Thanks sunnyflorida that is really great info on the dresser and closet! Is your d in Landis this summer?

She is in Gilchrist. Landis is not open for summer C, unless there are CARE or other special programs residing there. But I recall the furniture and rooms were similar.

She has roomed in several dorms for summer programs over the past 6 years, including dorms at UT Austin and UCLA. The refurbished dorms we toured at FSU were roomier and had more closet space and nicer furniture than we expected. I recall her living out of a 24" closet at one location, and another had a 36" closet, but there was no room for a dresser EXCEPT for inside the closet, so there was about 6" for hanging jeans/dresses and everthing else went into the dresser that stayed inside the closet (not a built-in dresser, one stuck inside.) S

She had a low housing number :), :), so we never saw the inside of some of the older/nonrefurbished dorms at FSU. But Landis, Gilchrist, Broward, Bryan, Murphee, Reynolds etc were better than expected.

Thanks for the info! With girls every inch of dresser and closet space is a precious commodity!

Is this thread still going? Lol. I have been assigned 431 in Landis as well, which is a triple, and I was wondering if anyone had input!
I don’t think anyone else is probably responding to this old thread, but I thought I’d add my .02 cents. My daughter is in Gilchrist for Summer C, but she has been in Landis, one of her good friends was in Landis last year, I believe on the 4th floor, but not sure which room. I don’t think you have much to worry about in Landis. Both Landis and Gilchrist seem to be the very nicest of those older buildings. My D is on the 4th floor in Gilchrist, in one of those oddly shaped rooms with a dormer window, and it is smaller than the other rooms, but she likes the unique shape of it. She is going to be in Cawthon in the fall, and we saw inside Cawthon, and the rooms seemed huge compared to Gilchrist…I’m not sure if they are, but they look it, especially the triples. The bad thing is, in the fall, my D is in a double that shares a bathroom with a triple, so 5 girls in one bathroom is a bit much, but I’m sure they will work it out. I can tell you that Cawthon seemed much more run down than Gilchrist and Landis…I mean, it’s still a nice place, but had older carpet and the furniture in the common room seems older. I heard that the ovens in the kitchens in Cawthon don’t work very well…I’m not sure if that is true or not, but I have heard that. I think that you will be great in Landis. From what I’ve seen and my D has seen, it seems to be one of the very nicest of all the housing on that side. So you should be in good shape, although I guess you could get one of those weirdly shaped rooms with the dormer window like my D, and they are slightly smaller, but she and her roommate are still happy with their room. Good luck in the fall!
