Lang B

Okay, I'm new to IB.
What happens if your school doesn't offer Language B of your choice?
I've been learning Spanish for one and a half years at my current school, I'm far from fluent, but I'd rather take it at the IB school I'm transferring to than start a new language from scratch.

bumppppp :/

I know a lot of people at my school who study A1 subjects other than English get private tutors for their language. If you can find a tutor, you can request that your school allow you some free periods to study Spanish with them.

Hm, okay. Thanks. But I think my parents are ringing the school to check anyway.

Hey wait, do IB schools allow people to self-study exams, if you pay for them and get the requirements done?

I was going to do French Ab Initio this way since taking Spanish prohibits me from taking Physics SL and without Spanish I don’t get my IB Diploma.

^ Okay that was really confusing. Why can’t you get your IB Diploma without doing Spanish?

Spanish is my Group B language. Need a Group B language or an A2 language for my diploma.

However, I want to do Physics SL, and can’t do that without taking the first year of Physics.

Other complications in my schedule make this the only year I can take Physics 1, while next year my schedule is filled by TOK

^ Oh okay.
I have an option: either to learn French in six-ish months for the IB course, or to continue with Spanish and take Spanish as my IB by self-studying.
If you do A2 is the language on the same level as if it were your A1 language?

Yes, and you can be awarded a Bilingual IB Diploma.

It’s basically a native-level speaking course, conducted solely in that language. Real topics that occur in the culture of the language.

Self-studying is hard since it’s not just the exams you have to worry for. There are other assessments in IB that attribute to your overall grade for the course.

There’s your regular school grade for the course, then there’s the Overall IB grade.

The IB Grade is 1-7 and includes exams and IAs, the major projects.

^ Thanks for clearing some things up, that really helped. If the school has A2 classes, then I may be doing the Bilangual IB diploma. But the women on the phone from the school is like the reliever for the actual person who is supposed to help with this so she speaks confusingly. :/
