**There are several options to fulfill the "international" requirement.

Which, BTW, is a HUUUUGE advantage of Indiana University.

You can do 1 of 3 things.

1) take 2 semesters worth of foreign language classes

2) study abroad

3) take international business classes (international marketing,
strategy, etc.)

Oh yes, you heard me right. Amazing isn't it? :). It's the small
things like this that make you find the "right" college for you in
the search process.

Just my .02**

There is also a fourth (and maybe the easiest, if you can't test out of the requirement, or into an advanced foreign language class) way to fulfill the international dimension that "double counts," that is, the same two classes count toward the international dimension and six hours of the general education distribution option:

The international dimension requirement may be fulfilled in one of the following four ways: [cont.]
Area Studies
1. a minimum of six credit hours
2. credits count for General Education component
3. a minimum of six credit hours on approved list (see business academic advisor for list), selected from one of the following areas:
1. African studies
2. Central Eurasian studies
3. East Asian studies
4. India studies
5. Latin American and Caribbean studies
6. Near Eastern studies
7. Russian and East European studies
8. West European studies

For instance, you can take these two classes to fulfill the international dimension and also apply them to the S&H portion of the general education distribution option.

LTAM-L 210 THE LATIN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE (3 CR)
LTAM-L 211 CONTEMP PROB LATIN AMERICA (3 CR)

These two classes are kind of tough, but there are easier ones that qualify and the list changes each semester depending on what classes are offered.

**I love how on the general discussion board of college
confidential, the kids think there's no college in AMerica
that doesn't require foreign language.

Oh, how I love IU. :) Seriously, without this loophole,
I'd have 2 automatic Cs in my GPA hahahha.**

lmao, me 2, my friends were all shocked and jealous cause i only took 2 yrs. in high school and stopped while they are taking 4 b/c of their college

Enjoy it while it lasts. IU will likely require foreign language across the board for all undergrads in the next couple of years.

Proof please. :)

even if they do, it probably wont apply for people already in the school before the rule would take place

just a naive question, what is so bad about foreign language in college?

im taking spanish at the honors level in high school and im getting As. i enjoy the language even though i have no intention of pursuing it. so if i had to take it in college, i wouldn't be that upset about it.

so in general, why is there always such a fuss over having to take foreign language? obviously not for IU, but for college in general?

b/c many ppl think its a waste of time b/c they will forget it after college anyways and it just brings some ppl's grades down when it should be optional anyways
