How much do we have to take? What if one only took 2 years of a language in high school but wants to take something different at UCR?

You are required to take up to level 4 of a foreign language, which is equivalent to four quarters of foreign language if you start from level 1. If you take a placement test and show competency in a foreign language you may be placed into a higher level or you may even place high enough to be waived from taking a foreign language class.

i believe it’s 3 quarters–not 4.

I apologize, I was ignorant of the fact that the requirement for the BS degree differs from that of the BA degree. The following is a more accurate answer to your question:

**Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree: Students must complete the 4th-quarter level or its equivalent in one language with a grade of C or better or by demonstrating 4th quarter level proficiency through a UCR placement exam.

Bachelor of Science (BS) degree: Student must complete the 3rd-quarter level or its equivalent in one language with a grade of C or better or by demonstrating 4th quarter level proficiency through a UCR placement exam.

Thanks for the info DarkPrince.

I think it depends on which Bachelor’s degree you’re going for and which college you’re in. I know CHASS students are required to have foreign language classes, or at least to test out of it. I don’t think taking AP Foreign Language classes in high school and passing it will opt you out of doing the Foreign language requirement, or at least that’s what happened to me. I took the AP test for Chinese and passed it with a 5 but I did not get credit for it, I had to take the placement exam to opt out of Foreign language.
