Language Course (Japanese)

I didn't realize that in order to take this class, one must take a placement exam, and of course, the placement exam was like, three days ago or something, so I've missed it completely. Since this course is sequential, it doesn't offer japanese 1 in winter or spring, so i am now wondering what I can do to take it. If I take the winter placement exam, classes will have already started, so what happens then? I actually want to take the full language course, meaning 9 quarters of japanese, to learn, and as well as to fufill my language requirements as a chemistry major. Is this still possible? Can I somehow get into it?

Also, would you recommend I take the summer japanese language course, the intensive one in order to get into Japanese without being late somehow or way? And how would I do this? I see that there are already 51 students enrolled in this, how? How do i make this work, and who do I see to do get in on this if there's no way to get into elementary Japanese 2?

Are you saying you want to take Japanese 1? Because if you are, obviously the placement test doesn’t matter. They can’t make you take a placement test for something you don’t even know yet :-p

my friend had to take the chinese placement test despite not being chinese and without knowing a drop of chinese. if the japanese class works like the chinese class, I’d assume you have to take it.

if you cabin do the class this year, do intensive. not like you have much choice!

this year is especially hard because of budget cuts. I think this year you had to be in the minor or major to get in and there is like only one class. when I did japanese there were three classes!

Who do I ask for help with this? How do I get financial aid to help cover the fees for this summer class? How do I sign up for the class? It’s almost too late.

Where would I stay during the summer for this class?

talk to murphy hall financial aid department.

how is it too late for summer classes? or are you talking about this year’s class?

you can sublease an apartment from someone and live there during summer.

If you’re planning to take the summer class you would be figuring all that stuff out later on. All the information you need will be on the summer classes page when it becomes available for the next year.

They offer housing for the summer terms btw(I stayed in housing over the summer).

I’m actually hoping to get out of the dorms for summer and the following school terms since it’s a huge amount of money wasted. I’ve been suggested to stay in co ops, which seem like an insanely better value for what you get compared to dorming. Anyone do this here?
Also, does anyone have better suggestions for housing, like apartments that are cheap and etc? Does financial aid still cover you if you are off campus?

I went to the financial office in murphy hall and asked them how much aid they’d cover and since i plan on taking 15 units, they’ll cover everything for me. But, i would have to take loans for the living. And that the next financial aid package for the regular school year would take a small hit, though they didn’t say how much of a hit, so does anyone know how much of a hit itwould take?

Co-op is cheap and you get food!

Apartments are cheap but if you cant cook, its gonna be expensive to live.

Financial aid still covers you but the amount you get is slightly less. I think it’s like 3k less which isnt bad since I save like 6 grand by going to an apartment.

I’m guessing you are in co op yourself, or were? How is it? And if you are a ucla student, are u guaranteed housing there, since I don’t want to apply for co op, neglecting ucla dorming and apartments, and then get turned down and remain with no place to stay for the quarter or year. And how would I apply for co op during summer as well, and would the same fear i have above me possibly come to pass here too?

IIRC, Japanese 1 is essentially walk-in. Also, co-ops can be hit or miss. I’ve heard some awful stories about rats in co-ops…

Im supposed to start looking around november and december for apartments right? Because I’ll have to mark on financial aid off campus housing. Any places you can recommend that are cheap, for 1 to 2 people max?

coldness,

Depending on how you define “cheap,” you’ll probably want to look south of Wilshire Blvd. Prices increase quite a bit once you’re north of Wilshire.

You can occasionally luck out in Westwood, but you’ll often be sharing a bedroom.
