Just wondering, with language sequences (for example, Arabic 1A, 1B, 1C), it seems that one can only start taking a language during fall quarter.

If I am unable to unroll in a '1A' language course, will I have to wait until next year? Seems like it.

for the less popular languages (pretty much anything besides spanish, french, and I think german), that is the case. Check the department policy, you may have to take a placement test before enrolling (I had to with chinese, despite having absolutely no experience). My advice with arabic if it is full right now is to go ahead and go on the waitlist. I guarantee you by the end of the first week you’ll be enrolled (the more difficult languages have a pretty big drop out rate, half my chinese 1 class dropped within the first week, and were quickly replaced).

the waitlist is full too. shucks, this is annoying.

for arabic you have to start in the fall, or else you’ll be waiting for another year. i’ve taken 3 years of arabic and have never seen anyone get turned away. even if you can’t make it onto the waiting list, just show up to class anyway and the prof will add you.

it seems like they just added a section for 1A, you might want to check that out.

i wish they listed the names of the arabic TAs on the class schedule so i could advise you who to take a certain section with. some of the TAs aren’t very good at teaching :/

thanks for your help. i’m actually still trying to decide between arabic and farsi. hmm hmmm hmm.

Has anyone taken Italian with Strom/Baranello/Van Ness?

thanks

How hard is the spanish 1 course at UCLA. I havent had any sort of spanish experience and I am fluent in korean and english, but since I am a premed I want to learn spanish to have it on my resume. I know UCLA classes are much harder but is the spanish language class really hard too?
