Language Flagship programs

I am trying to help a rising senior make a well rounded school list.
Money is going to be an issue. They will probably not qualify for aid but do to some periods of unemployment can not afford full fare at private schools.
The student is very interested in higher level Chinese. Possible major choices would be Political Science, International Affairs or Asian studies. 2100 SAT. Unweighted GPA 3.6.
Ca resident and will apply to UC's but they are getting so unpredictable that they want to find other schools that would come in at around the same cost.
I came across the Chinese Flagship programs. How competitive are the programs? Any experiences?

Adding- of particular interest of flagship schools
Univ of Oregon
Indiana Univ
Univ of Mississsippi
And OOS merit

An unusual one, but University of North Georgia has quite an extensive languages program. They’re a Senior Military College, but not all students are members of the Corps of Cadets.

Also, Tuition + Room and board @ UNG is roughly $26k for OOS.

IU has the full-ride Wells, but for OOS appliants the allication is due late September. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the flagship program (and almost attended).

There are 11 schools that offer the Chinese flagship programs I don’t know about all the schools but most requires that your degree is not in Chinese ie: economics, poli-sci, marketing etc… although you will be fluent in it by graduation. It includes a year of Study-Abroad and lots of free tutoring at the college. My girlfriend’s daughter got accepted into the program at Hunter College, it is just amazing what they offer. If you need more info I could possibly put you in touch with her since she is a member here.

I think your student definitely qualifies for the program. Although she would be paying more as an out of state student, New York State public colleges are have some of the lowest tuitions in the country. She would most likely qualifies for some merit and scholarships. If she can see herself in NYC message me and I’ll put you in contact with my friend.

Look at the University of South Carolina International Business Chinese Exchange (IBCE) Program along with applying to the South Carolina Honors College. Generous merit scholarships for OOS.
