Is it crazy to want to take Japanese even though I've already fulfilled my foreign language requirement? (ERC)

i'm going to take Korean even though my AP Spanish test cleared me too

and i'm taking beginning chinese this term even though i already cleared my language requirement with french. :)

not crazy. Im taking sign language just cuz i want to. lolz

Yeah I'm taking Latin just for kicks!

ima go for russian. woooo

Ugh, so I tried signing up for Beginning Chinese and it says I have to go to the department and take some placement test before I will be placed into the class ... there are still quite a few spots open, do you think it'll still be open by the time I take that placement test the few days before school starts?

How can you take a placement test for a language you haven't learned yet?

I have no clue ... I was just going to take the Chinese class that is for people with NO mandarin background or any background (even though I'm canto), but they told me to go take a placement test then you'll have an interview with the professor who will place you into a class ... I think that's completely ridiculous.

what about for sign language?

Sign language is so much fun! Its a pretty easy class, too.

i read that the classes (the ones for people with no experience like the 1A/1AX series) are taught entirely in the foreign language. is this true? because if you don't know any of the language how are you supposed to know what the teacher is saying? or is more like one of those immersion programs where you're forced into learning by guessing what the teacher is saying.

You'll learn more of that language through an immersion environment.

i love japanese, thats all i can say..

don't worry, that placement test is a joke. mine took all of three minutes and i got placed into beginning chinese.

as long as you're first in line to take the placement test, you should be first in line to register -- that's probably why there are still open spots, all the freshmen haven't gotten to campus yet.

Should I even bother waiting around until the 9/17 to take the placement test and then (most likely) waitlisting myself for Chinese? Do I have a chance of getting in? Or should I just sign up for another PofC?

what's wrong with signing up for another PofC right now, taking the placement test when you get here, and going from there???

Just a quick survey: are you guys taking the extra language for a letter grade or pass/no pass?

Latin here. Letter grade.

Would it be better to take it for a letter? I don't understand what the benefits of pass/no pass or taking a letter grade are.
