Language Majors at Columbia

Hey guys, just wondering how difficult/rigorous it would be to major in a language compared with other majors at Columbia?

Hey there - your question is hard to answer mostly because it really depends how good are you at languages / interested in them.

As someone that majored in a language and in a non-language field, I found both to take up the same amount of time. I did like that the quality of writing was still expected to be high and rigorous, so it isn’t like they treat you kindly just because you aren’t writing in English, but I like languages so yeah.

^ what was your other major? did you double major or switch?

Columbia is my first choice and right now I’m planning on double majoring in biochem and foreign lang so I’m trying to find out more about how that would work out at Columbia.

other major was in social sciences, and yes it was a full double major. though the for lang one was more an accident (i took enough courses) than a straight out design. i also took number of classes in other for langs while in school so i found it more than manageable.

unless you see yourself going to grad school to do for lang - my suggestion is just take classes, roughly pay attention to the major requirements (or concentration requirements), but don’t feel compelled to major in the for lang; in the end it is language ability that matters as a marketable tool, and less having the major in the books, so if you don’t finish the major, it isn’t a big deal. it almost is better to do 2-3 languages and get pretty solid in them than to major in one.
