Language Placement Exam (spanish)

Hi I'm really confused about this whole placement exam. I took spanish all four years in high school and took the AP test and got a 4.

On the UCSD website:
UCSD Literature Department LD LTSP Information

it says stuff about "if you received a _ on the AP test, you should take _"

Does this mean that I have to take the placement exam or am I exempt

Also, what if I don't want to take the level the website says I should take? I'm not comfortable starting with that level. i kinda struggled with spanish so i wanna start low. i think i was a borderline 3-4 on the AP exam. will they still make me take the level they say i should take?

Thanks in advance!!

uh ... i think you're exempt from taking any more language classes if you got a 4 or 5 (at least, that's how it works in french). check your college's website for exact details.

generally students start a language in the linguistics department (LISP 1A/1AX to LISP 1D/1DX), then if they want to go beyond the requirements of their college's GEs, they can enter the literature series (LTSP 2A, etc).
