Does anyone know when you find out what class you placed into? Or even what the test is scored out of?

Our 2 kids were able to find out relatively soon after the test. As I remember it is available through the student’s webadvisor sight.

Oh okay thank you. Do you happen to know if mid 400’s is a good score? I just want something solid – not a beginner but not the higher classes either.

The raw scores are then assigned cutoffs by test administrators in order to place students in the appropriate class. Obviously these cutoffs can vary from school to school and so calibration is strongly recommended. Below are BYU’s cutoffs for the first 4 semesters of Spanish:

Spanish 101: 0 - 295
Spanish 102: 296-355
Spanish 201: 356-439
Spanish 202: 440 and up

Oh okay so I’d be in 202. If I didn’t want to take that, could I take 201?

No ideea, I’m an incoming freshman as well.

Oh sorry! Ha, well if I find out anymore information, I’ll let you know.

I’m pretty sure that BYU’s cutoffs are irrelevant for Furman. It’s a different school with different students and different courses. I’m not even sure the placement test is the same one.

For one thing, the placement test score is only one of about 4 factors that Furman looks at to determine placement. Others include which courses you took in high school, your high school record in those courses, etc.

My best advice: if you are planning to take spanish (for example) put it in your course selection and don’t worry about it. You’ll be placed in the appropriate course, and there is no use worrying about it until you see what you got in August.

HI everyone,
I might be wrong, but Furman does not use the national placement exam for languages developed by BYU. At least, our two kids, having recently taken the BYU developed test believe that. My research on the Furman website indicates that is the case. Both of our kids are rising seniors and went through the language placement test 3 summers ago. If you place, for example in Spanish 202, then it is my understanding you cannot move down a level. Remember if you do place in the intermediate level and feel comfortable with your skills, check to see if that course meets the GER requirement and you will only have to take one semester of a foreign language.

Then why is the placement exam taken on the website webcape. byuhtrsc. org, so it IS developed by BYU.

Does anyone know the cutoffs for Furman? I just took this test and would like to know what class I am looking at.

chelssd32 I just took the test today. Have you found out anything yet?

Nope, I just know my raw score. It’s killing me though because I am seriously against taking a year and a half of spanish…how about you?

I just know my raw score…
