Language Placement Exams?

I'm going to be taking the Spanish Placement Exam in about a month and I was wondering what it is like. Is it translation? listening exercises? multiple choice? or some combination of those three? Is it more vocab or grammar based? Also how hard is it and what can I expect in terms of results? I took 3 years in high school with A/A- grades.

IU uses a test developed by the University of Wisconsin. No listening or speaking on the test. Grammar is emphasized way more than vocabulary.

A description of the test and sample questions are here:

“One of the most important factors related to placement scores is number of years studying Spanish. Not surprisingly, students’ scores on the placement test are in direct relationship to the number of Spanish courses they took in middle and high school: the more Spanish courses taken, the higher the placement. We have also noticed that the assumed high school/college equivalence may be somewhat different from what we expected in the past. Generally speaking, it appears that three years of high school Spanish are roughly equivalent to one year (two semesters) of college study.”

The test scores run from 150 to 800. My son got a 644 on it last summer and was placed in S275, passed it, and received three credits for it and ten credits (four for 100-level; and three each for S200 and S250) for lower level Spanish classes. IU did away with S275, so who knows where this score would place now. They are starting a class numbered S280 this fall. It imight be the new fifth semester Spanish class.
