If you have AP or IB credit for a language but don't score as well on UNC's official language placement exam, does it matter? Does UNC still let you place out of the courses for which you have credit?

Does anyone know the answer?

“During orientation, you will take a University placement exam in the foreign language you have studied unless you have taken an SAT subject, AP, or IB language test AND have evidence of your exam results with you at orientation.”

If I remember correctly an IB/AP score only places you into a class and gives you condition credit. Therefore if you don’t do well on the placement exam but have IB/AP you would probably be served best to follow their placement rather than to start a class you won’t do well in. I do hear though that the orientation people like to convince everyone to take the placement test whether they need it or not.

The best idea is to have transfer credit from a CC for the level of foreign language you need. Then UNC can’t require you to take the placement test and you are done with your FL requirement.

How many transfer credits do you need to fufill the foreign language requirement?

Thanks!

I’ve got AP credit for Spanish 203 and 204. Howver, I placed INTO Spanish 203 on the Spanish placement exam which has to be taken prior to CTOPS. If I’m reading everything correctly, I shouldn’t have to take any more courses for my major based on my AP scores. Just want to make sure that the placement exam score isn’t used…Has anyone been to CTOPS and registered yet?

I’ve gotten so many reminder emails about these placement exams. Since I have one of the last few CTOPS sessions, can’t I just wait until mid-july or something?
And if I get a 4 or 5 on my AP language exam, would that fulfill all of my FL requirement if I’m a science major?

I can’t find where I originally quoted from but the orientation site says you have to take it anyway:
