Anyone know how hard the Chinese placement test is for a typical ABC who has studied chinese (can listen and speak fairly well, but maybe at a 5th grade level in writing/reading)?

Wait, are you at an American/English 5th grade writing level or the 5th grade writing level in CHinese schools? Because i think they do some pretty sophisticated writing in 5th grade...

Well, I'm taking the last level of chinese offered at my high school (Chinese IV). Actually, I think its the equivalent to about 4th grade in chinese schools. I hope to boost my chinese skills to the 5th grade level over the summer though.

You should be fine. I passed the test and I doubt I'm at a 5th grade level in writing/reading. If you don't feel confident, just study a little on your own.

Wait, is the Chinese test for placing into a higher level in college, or to fill language requirements altogether?

is there such a test to simply waive out of taking any language classes?(offered from Penn, not SAT IIs?)

It's a placement test, depending on how you do no it, you get placed in to the appropriate next level of Chinese.

So while there are some very basic questions there are also some very hard questions.
