Do all incoming freshman have to take the language placement test? Can any current students clarify if there is a language requirement for pre-business Fisher students? Do you need to get a certain grade on the language placement test so as NOT to take language at OSU as a pre-business student? If you do poorly, do you then HAVE to take a language?

The Gen Ed list under semesters says that there is only a foreign language requirement for those wishing to specialize in International Business.

At my orientation three years ago, every student took a foreign language placement test as part of the day’s activities, but for me, as a current business student, the credit I earned in Spanish doesn’t count for anything beyond credit toward graduation.

I would still take the placement test- many other majors require foreign language courses, and so if you switch from business to something else, having credit for a few courses is to your advantage.

If you do poorly, there are no repercussions. You just get less credit. Don’t worry about it, it really is a low-pressure test.

If you already have college credit for foreign language (like AP credit), you don’t have to take the test. The only major within Fisher that needs any foreign language is international business, so unless you want to do that major then it won’t even matter how you score on the test. OSU will place you in a certain class, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to take it, it’s just so you know where you stand if you ever do want to take foreign language, or have to.
