Hey everyone, I have a couple of questions about the placement tests at W&M and hopefully some of you are a bit wiser about all of this than I am. Personally, I was planning on taking two different language placement tests: the trouble is, due to difficulties at my old school I have been completely away from any formal study of my languages for a full year now. :/

I was under the impression that these placement tests were for each students own personal use, and not necessarily something that would effect which level of a language we choose to enroll in. Accurate or not? If not, where the bleeding hell can I get ahold of a study guide for this test?

For the most part, our Modern Languages Department does not offer placement tests. Placement in foreign language classes is based on either a) the most recent course taken or b) SAT Subject scores or AP/IB exam scores. There are placement exams for Chinese, Russian, Italian and Japanese but they are used to supplement the other methods of placement.

Alright, thanks for the info W&M Admission!

I am studying Russian, but my school doesn’t offer it (and there is no AP or SAT II for it). What would I need to do in order to determine the best placement (if I am lucky enough to be accepted)?

What would be best is to meet with a professor from that department.
