Can someone please tell me what is asked on the Language Placement Questionnaire? Is it what courses you have taken or an actual foreign language test? Thanks!

It’s just a questionnaire, not a test.

thanks, dolphnlvr6

my son got place in SP1120- Intensive Intro to Spanish.

How much Spanish had he studied in high school? Hoping my D will fill it out today!

He had 3 years in HS. But honestly his teachers were awful! I had the SAME Spanish teachers when I went to HS! They should have retired a long long time ago. It’s two brothers and they teach the exact same thing every year…there is no progression.

I’m anxious to see where my D is placed. She took AP Spanish this year, but, like you, the teacher was not proper for this level course.

Some perspective from someone that took 3 years of Italian in high school…and learned absolutely nothing: A lot of people come in under-prepared in the language they took in HS. However, when Tulane sees you took 3-4 years of Spanish, for example, they assume you have some proficiency and place you in a mid level Spanish class. If you feel you are not prepared by your HS language, consider switching to an intro level in another language (many people that took Spanish switch to Italian, French, etc). Or, explain to your adviser that you learned nothing in the HS language class and insist that you register for a lower level class. Your placement via the online language placement is not mandatory (although the adviser may give you a hard time).

Thanks for the personal point of view. Awaiting the placement from Tulane.

Totally agree with TulaneFreshman. I see this all the time, and I also see students whose high school language classes were more rigorous and so they are perfectly fine in the higher level course. It can be hard to know how you stack up before you get there, but it is usually easy to switch to a lower level if you feel overwhelmed the first week of class. For most languages there are numerous intro level sections.
